Let me add another question: with the original lens hood, it is impossible to put on the lens cap with hood on. There is just not enough space to fiddle around. How is that with either the Overgaard lens hood, or the alternative one from Ebay that appeared earlier on this thread?

Thanks.

If you mean 'it is impossible to put the filter on with hood on' that is quite right. As I understand the Overgaard one (from images) there will be room to change filters while the hood is on. I assume the other actually attaches to the filter ring itself and so comes off with the filter.

But with both the original lens cap will not fit and to get it to fit with the Overgaard one you have to remove the hood and replace the original thread cover and then attach the lens cap. There may be other solutions? But with the vents I guess dust could still get on the lens even if there was a cap on the hood.

I put the Leica black metal lens cap over the Leica lens hood all the time - that's how I store the Q when it's not in use. It's a snug fit, but it works just fine. Been using it that way since I got it in Nov. '15.

Hi if you are using the Overgaard's Q Lens Shade, you can use a 49mm Pinch Cap on the filter ring directly.

These caps are very cheap in Hong Kong.

Agreed. A trusted method. There is no way the lens hood should feel insecure. I found it took some force initially which I was a bit uncertainn about doing. As far as I can see you cannot overtighten it. It stops when in the right position and it feels toally secure.

For goodness sakes!! Please put a little facial oil on the hood's threads. It'll go on and off much easier.

I'm looking for the original hood.

And, just like you guys feel about the Overgaard rip-off, I feel about the price Leica asks for this simple piece of aluminium.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a SINGLE one at an affordable price. 100 USD is simply ridiculous, compared to a LIM's half case with aluminium bottom plate and grip and all.

The ugly round and ventilated ones arend an option, but nobody seems to be willing to part with their original hood, it seems?!

And the guy I got the Q from didn't know nothing about the hood, nor the original strap.

I don’t get the thinking that you need a different hood in order to turn a polarizer filter. I regularly use a polarizer on my Q/Q2 with the original Leica hood. With just a little dexterity, I can turn the filter to the optimum position. It does require that I remove the hood to change filter, which one would not have to do with the Overgaard. IMHO the Q hood is very well designed and does a superb job of protecting the front lens element from physical harm. Furthermore, I like the design. Minimalist as is the Q. The Overgaard filter changes the look of the camera and does not protect the front element nearly as much. Of course we all look at the same situation and have our own opinions. Go for it if you like the Overgaard, but for me I’m happy with what came with the camera.

Fitted my hood on my (new to me this week) Leica Q,

The lens cap is really tight on the lens to remove, but was a lot easier and smoother on the hood to remove, which looks never to been used.

Perhaps too smooth, as it fell off today on my second day out with the Q, made a nice noise as it hit the pavement and rolled on to a busy road.

It survived but it is now battle scared. At least I did not loose it. A bit of tape to be added tomorrow to make a snug fit I reckon.

Amazing camera though, better than I thought it would be

I just saw this today on Leica Miami's Site. It looks like a reasonable solution for folks wanting to use a cap with the existing hood. Looks much better than the Leica cap.

$200 for a lens shade, seriously? This guy is the king of business... you'll find the same ones on ebay for $10 :)

I purchased a sub-US$10 round, metal, unvented, wide-angle designed hood and fitted front cap from fleabay, retiring the gorgeous and pricey square hood to the case/chest of my pristine, new Q-P.  Avoid vignetting by using a hood designed for wide angle lenses - it will also provide wider protection.  Now if I ding the hood while scrambling with camera, I'm not as concerned about cosmetic damage.  A black LIM gripped half case also adds protection - without drawing much additional attention.  No comment on the offered semi-precious, vented version - other than a healthy chuckle.  whatever.
