I have just called Leica in Germany here.

They told me according to the serial number that my camera had been there in 2008 and the sensor had been replaced. Great news for me!

They also told me that in case of having problems with the sensor again it would be no problem to replace again.

Greetz to all

Thanks for information,

and now have fun with your D2 - without sorrow of sensor-problems.

John, if you only can laugh at someone and his sorrow, who has only one digilux 2 in stock, taking this camera on trips and holiday vacation for keeping his valuable memories into photos, I cannot help you . I think if one buy this camera he has the right 1) to know if the sensor has been replaced so that the camera is ok, and 2) if not, that the camera has to be taken to a condition which is "normal". Even the original sensor may work, there is the danger that it will fail, and that possibility can be fixed with a change of sensor. Sure, a camera in normal condition can fail anyway and anytime during useage, but thats fate. The sensor problem is a foreseen problem - a product fault(!) from the factory. That is different.

Alberto wrote in his posting that he understand the sorrow. And sure there is a risk to send in the cam and so on. Accepted. That has to be well balanced. I for myself would everytime decide to take that lower risk then the trouble that during a trip the sensor may fail - something that could be avoided before.

Good is the fact, that the sensor is still replaced free by Leica (thanks for that!), and that everyone can check if his camera has a new sensor - to decide.

I understand the sorrow. I don't understand the irrational approach to treating everything as if it is going to break. The camera is not broken. It is NOT a fact that all sensors are bad....

Sorry, but the preaching "send it to be fixed in case it breaks" makes no sense. Someone around here is yelling "FIRE!" when in fact, there is no fire.

Furthermore, your information contradicts information I've personally experienced. I'm happy the outcome for you was such as it was... but, again, I think you're making a lot of assumptions.

Sorry, I just don't live life worrying about what might go wrong.

I have two D2's, one with a changed sensor and another without a new sensor. I don't necessarily expect the one without the changed sensor to fail. It would be interesting to know what percentage of these have failed since 2004. Most people will report a failed sensor, but how many owners never report anything because nothing has happened to their cameras.

Is it irrational, that I as a customer, want a product which is free of faults from production?

I don´t mean a perfect product, but must I accept a product which is known that a part MAY fail under special circumstances? When car companies make a call back (and therefore we see some strange examples at the moment), it is not said that ALL cars of that special type will have the error, but ALL are called back to check! What you (maybe) accept as normal for cars, it is also normal for ANY other product on the market.

I have explained it several times, like above! To keep your speech: If someone say there is danger of fire I will look that the fire will not begin! That is really normal!

Maybe that results from the fact you live in the USA and I in Germany, and the Solms Headquarter is here, not in the US. Maybe the sensor problem is handled different in the USA - I do not know, but I talk from my personal experience (my sensor was changed without any problem when the camera was in Solms) and after a lot of talks to leica CS stuff directly in Wetzlar at the "Leica Event days" 2009, 2008. If I would speak only assumptions, I will say it before. I am serious. If you post here, that I only give assumptions, I have to say (I hope my english words are not too hard sounding, but it is not my native language) that this is a kind of unobjective assertion without any substance.

Me too, John! But I also believe, there is a big difference between legitimate wariness (sorrow) and a kind of carelessness about problems I can avoid..

Just an example at the end: Imagine, I go for a long wished far distance travel, D2 is my main camera. I am aware about the sensor problem, but I did not change the sensor. I make my photos and suddenly I recognize that there is the error occuring. After coming back I would post my frustration in the forum. Many people would ask;: "why did you not check the camera before...." and exactly that is what I recomend.

An alternative is to have a 2nd D2 with me on the trip. Maybe that is possible, but I think the most expensive solution.

Finally I think we posted our arguments enough, and we end this theme in discordance. OK, never mind. But it´s fine to discuss these things here for others getting a maybe more clear view, either your view is right or mine.

No harm meant,

greetings
