Another bag question: a real everyday bag?

Seems like this is always coming up. But I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

What I want is a small backpack, slingpack, or shoulder bag in which I can carry:

  • M8 with one small (<2" length) lens attached
  • MacBook Pro 15" + power cables, etc.
  • A trade paperback book of ordinary size
  • A small notebook
  • Some pens and cards and miscellany

Basically what I want is an everyday bag that I can feel comfortable is protecting my computer and M8 without committing to one of those crazy cart all your gear backpack bags. A bag that would really make the computer/office use primary and the camera-toting secondary. I don't want to carry extra lenses or stuff. Just the one rig and my computer

Currently I'm carrying the M8 just anywhere I can fit it in my bag and it makes me nervous.

I am really pleased with my latest combo set-up which consists of the inside padding elements from the ACAM-7000

which i believe are identical to IN2-1000 (much cheaper way of getting them):

together with this canvas computer bag from MUJI Online

Offline MUJI also have a green canvas version that looks a bit less like a computer bag.

If i had it with me now i could take some shots, but in any case, the great thing about the MUJI bag is that it has so many padded areas and pockets: a padded slot for your laptop, an inner sleeve for papers/passports other documents, and then it''s the perfect size for the 7100 padding. It also has the flap zippered pocket, which i throw my keys and cellphone into.

A great bag for a variety of objects, and best of all it looks a bit like all you have in there is a sweaty gym-shirt and possibly some weed. ;)

EDIT: i'm confused now about which number bag i actually bought from A&A - please check the dimensions if you think this sounds like a good idea.

I don't think you will find something like that. To start with any bag/backpack that is big enough to carry a notebook computer is not small. Not many poeple would want something like that so no manufacturer make one because it wouldn't sell.

Since you don't want to put in too much photo gear I'd suggest the following.. If possible go to an Apple Store (or try ordering it at their online store, not sure if it's listed though).

At the Apple Store here in Toronto, I found that very slingback bag you're lookingh fo for.

Sorry, don't remember the make but igure all stores have the same or similar inventory.

Good luck.

I carry the same stuff you list. Here is what I use and like;

Patagonia Lightwire Pack (Large)

The Patagonia Lightwire bag. Excellent computer sleeve with plney of room for a few cables an M8 with lens, phone, ipod, etc. Holds a fair amount but is smallish for a backpack.

Nice outside mesh pockets for water bottles. Great organizer section for pens, paper, keys, etc.

Here is a link to great photo bags:

Mad website, but with persistence, there is a lot of information to be found.

The bags are a bit pricey (like all Crumpler kit), but beautifully made of high quality stuff and they'll have a photo bag to meet your needs exactly - I like the "Pretty Boy" - excellent camera bag in the bottom and a dedicated laptop wallet in the top - and still room for your jumper, old socks etc.

If you're in the States the same bags have different names - look here:

The Patagonia looks really nice.

I use a backpack with a pouch for papers in it that is about 9x12 inches. Between my back and the pouch I put the laptop. In the rest of the pack I put -- wrapped or bagged -- camera stuff.

The pack then contains:

1. laptop

2. M8 in Eagle Creek bag with 4 lenses (to be removed from the bag and carried as the "camera bag")

3. 75 'lux in pouch

4. Metz 54 and 2 sets of 4 AA batteries

5. Little Leica tripod and ball head

6. Some filters in plastic boxes, like polarizer.

The whole point for me is that the Eagle Creek bag inside and the backpack DON'T look like they have anything of interest in them. The backpack is 20 years old, faded, but solid.

When the laptop is with me I notice that this stuff gets heavy.

G'luck. Stay invisible.

I'll add another vote for a Domke satchel.

I am currently traveling with one right now and I have:

-- Camera (M8, 75mm, 35mm, 15mm (and finder))

-- Fujitsu Lifebook P7010

-- Couple magazines, paper back

-- Notebook, pens

-- Battery charger, power for laptop and cell phone, spare batteries (laptop & camera), etc...

there is enough room for me to cram a light lunch and 20oz bottle of soda/water while I am walking around finding a place to eat it.

The bag is small enough to fit under the seat of on a plane w/room for my feet, looks nothing like a camera bag or laptop bag and is easy to get in and out of so I can pull out my laptop at the security checkpoints at airports in less time than it takes to get my shoes on and off.

I've had this bag for years, having used back with an Nikon FE2, 85mm 2.0 and 20mm and worked for the manual focus version of the kit, but the AF version of this kit (Nikon D2h, 14mm and 85mm 1.4) would "fit" but there wasn't room for my laptop - so the bag ended up with the rest in my collection waiting for a good use. The M8 pulled this out of the retirement.
