Bokeh by any other name would smell as sweet......

Things go in cycles.  To me, I'm not particularly interested in bokeh as an attractive feature in itself, more that it should not distract the viewer from the subject of my picture.

But clearly the likes of Sony and Zeiss are making lenses that strive for smooth backgrounds, so their market research must tell them that there is a demand.  In the past, as mentioned above, there have been soft focus lenses, Nikon had defocus control, and we now have lenses with anodised edges from Fuji and Sony. Nikon also have specialty lenses such as the 58mm, 24mm and 35mm f1.4 that seem to favour smoothing the background over absolute crispness.

The APO 50mm M Summicron also aims for fast contrast fall off as, reportedly, the SL Summicrons will.  The 50mm SL seems to be influenced by this priority.  For a more direct comparison if we look at the M 21mm and 24mm lenses, the fast ones have attractive background blur, while the slower ones produce much cleaner, more clinical images, with less distinctive backgrounds.

We are spoilt for choice.

It is what happens when you try and hold a camera and an emptied bottle of single malt at the same time.

it was half empty:) :)

You don't want to see the pictures after we finish the bottle :)

I have oft had the impression that the light quality and direction has an influence on bokeh. Sometimes my Noct f1.0 has fabulous bokeh, other times very harsh. Without seriously testing the theory, I suspect the light is playing a factor in the outcome of the bokeh.
