For users of CV15 on M8 and Film M

Just a little cautionary example here...

I have (as do many people) a CV15 with a 39mm IR filter wedged into the shade for use on my M8, where it does a great job. But as a result of the need to wedge the filter in pretty firmly, removing it is non-trivial so I didn't bother when I used the lens for a couple of rolls on my MP recently. Anyone but stupid me would have anticipated the result... and the resulting wasted shots, though some of them are kind of cool if not what I wanted.

Here's a typical example:

Oh dear...

I assume that without the IR filter, this doesn't happen but if you know otherwise please do let me know!

Best to all

coming soon: aa easily removable filter holder/hood for the 15mm, hood sized for the M8 however.

Fantastic John, then I can just switch between film and digital bodies at will.

Did you get the filter I sent you for mounting last week?

Wow, Tim, mine does not vignette like that. I am easily able to fix my vignette when I scan or in lightroom. large.jpg

Maybe I have my filter pushed back in the lens hood further.

In any case, I will be waiting for John's adapter so that I can just remove the filter when I want to use this lens on my M3 or M5.

Cindy, how DID you do that? You had the filter on, crammed into the hood, right? Any recall of aperture?

I am jealous and quite possibly even more stupid than I thought!

Any idea of cost and time scale? Assuming it's rational - please put me down for one - I can PayPal as soon as you have info.

Hopefully you got my LT-M8 order and payment - perhaps you could ship both together ;)

Tim: it shipped back to you on the 12th

the 15mm adapter will take the same 39mm filter complete, no dis-assembly required.

Thanks John, last time I had some screw to M adaptors from you the shipping was almost instant so this one must have got glitched in the mail. I'll keep an eye out for it for the next few days and maybe ask for a tracking number if it fails to show!

ps nice shot!

Thanks Tim,

I shot it at f/8 with my M3 and the CV 15mm. I was shooting BW400CN. I had the film developed at Walgreens and then I scanned it on a Scan Dual IV with VueScan.

I put my filter into the hood with packing tape cut into strips and about as wide as the filter. It fits in tight. The filter is pushed down below the edge of the two long hood "wings", but I did not hit the front element.

I had slight vignette on my negatives, but I corrected that with my scan. You probably could correct the amount that I had in photoshop or lightroom, also. I only had slight vignette in the corners, not the dark circle that your shot produced.

Thanks Cindy - I think that til JLM's new device is in production I'll try to ram the filter a little further back. I think it's more that than the apertures I used, because they were pretty much all at or around f5.6.

Tim: Emmet Gowin made tons o' LF pictures with vignetting like that - just call it "art"!

John M.: I need one of your codable LTM-M adapters, and perhaps the filter holder as well. Can you give me full particulars since I seem to have missed the forum threads on the subject - email, snail-mail, payment regime, price, which frameline keying to match the WATE to use Leica's corrections. A private message is OK.
