I was wondering if anyone uses any other charger other than the supplied one to charge their SL?  I am going on a trip and taking a couple of cameras, the 109 and the SL....maybe the T for some wide angle work.  I would rather not take 3 different chargers if at all possible.  I've had hit n' miss on universal chargers in the past.  Hopefully someone has a choice that might work for all 3.

I'm going to go out and start to answer my own questions.  I just picked up the following charger from Amazon.

Lenmar Universal Charger.  At $7 it was well worth the risk.  To test something else out, I purchased this step-up voltage regulator to see if I could use the Lenmar to charge from a portable USB battery.  My largest concern with the setup is the Lenmar battery.  The SL's positive and negative voltage regulators are quite high and I hope that the Lenmar is able to adjust to be high enough to touch the contacts.

I will test and find out.

This combination tested out perfectly.  I was able to use my Anker portable charger to charge the SL battery today without issue.  It was difficult to get the prongs of the Lenmar charger lined up, but once I did it identified the battery and charged it without issue.  This charger will also work with the Typ 109 I will bring on the trip as well as the T that maybe be added for the wide angle lens.

I have only done a single charge for now.  I will check when I have two empty batteries that need to be charged.  That may take some time because that doesn't happen very often.  However I looked on the back of the chargers and found the following information.

1.  Leica branded charger does 8.4V at .85A

2.  Lenmar select 8.4V at 1000A.

I got a degree in chemistry so electrical engineering is outside of what I know, but I would suspect the Lenmar might charge a hair faster?  Maybe someone will chime in that actually knows something.

I have a further update.

I have now charged batteries about 3 times with this system. To date I have had one issue with a battery that had completely died in the camera. The Lenmar charger mis-identified the voltage and charging stopped after a short period of time. The battery is 7.4 volts and it came identifying it as 6.2 volts. After I put the battery in it's OEM charger, it started charging. Midway through I took it off and put in on this system and it identified the correct voltage and finished off the charge.

Does the 109 charge off micro usb. The T does so there's one you don't "need" the charger for.

Personally I take two chargers when I travel anyway, even if it's one camera. last thing I need is no pictures because my only charger dies first day.

Yes, I always bring two chargers with me. The Leica chargers can/do fail - I know by experience...

I have now two of the new USB ULSL charger from Nitecore. http://charger.nitecore.com/CHARGER/CAMERA/ULSL/ designed for SL battery only.

They work very well together on a multiple USB charger.

There are some other Nitecore chargers for some Leica cameras : M9, M240 and Q.

The nitecore charger looks interesting!

Anybody who knows a nitecore dealer in europe or a shop that ships to germany?

Here's your shop: https://www.nitecore-shop.de/nitecore-ulsl-fuer-leica-cameras.html

@Leicaiste: Are these charging as fast as their official Leica counterparts? They look  interesting for the smaller size alone...

Difficult to say without making a direct comparison. A nice feature is to be able to see on the screen (more or less) the level of charge.

The big pluses with USB chargers are that you can use them easily in a car with a small phone charger plug, or with many type of battery packs (for iPad, etc.) in the field, or with solar panels etc.

I just ordered two (one for the SL and one for the Q) from Amazon in the U.S. I think they will be great for travel. I also bought a two port USB charger from Amazon Basics.

The nitecore ULSL looks great - unfortunately I cannot find it anywhere - out of stock in those places that offer it. I also could not find any offers on amazon.com

About the time of charge: Is the speed the same as the ordinary charger ? Or is it slower (because USB is probably limited in power)  ?

Here is the link to it on Amazon. Unfortunately, it is now listed as "unavailable" with no info on when they might have it back in stock. This thread may have caused a run on it.

Fortunately, you can get it directly from the Nitecore Store. Click on the discount coupon code in this link:
