BCMielke Posted February 25, 2017 Share #1 Â Posted February 25, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was wondering if anyone uses any other charger other than the supplied one to charge their SL? Â I am going on a trip and taking a couple of cameras, the 109 and the SL....maybe the T for some wide angle work. Â I would rather not take 3 different chargers if at all possible. Â I've had hit n' miss on universal chargers in the past. Â Hopefully someone has a choice that might work for all 3. Â Â
Advertisement Posted February 25, 2017 Posted February 25, 2017 Hi BCMielke, Take a look here Universal Travel Charger for SL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
BCMielke Posted March 1, 2017 Author Share #2 Â Posted March 1, 2017 I'm going to go out and start to answer my own questions. Â I just picked up the following charger from Amazon. Â Â Lenmar Universal Charger. Â At $7 it was well worth the risk. Â To test something else out, I purchased this step-up voltage regulator to see if I could use the Lenmar to charge from a portable USB battery. Â My largest concern with the setup is the Lenmar battery. Â The SL's positive and negative voltage regulators are quite high and I hope that the Lenmar is able to adjust to be high enough to touch the contacts. Â I will test and find out. BCMielke Posted March 2, 2017 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 2, 2017 This combination tested out perfectly. Â I was able to use my Anker portable charger to charge the SL battery today without issue. Â It was difficult to get the prongs of the Lenmar charger lined up, but once I did it identified the battery and charged it without issue. Â This charger will also work with the Typ 109 I will bring on the trip as well as the T that maybe be added for the wide angle lens.
sincurves Posted March 3, 2017 Share #4 Â Posted March 3, 2017 Thanks for that, never thought of this option! Would the charging time vary versus using the original charger?
BCMielke Posted March 3, 2017 Author Share #5 Â Posted March 3, 2017 I have only done a single charge for now. Â I will check when I have two empty batteries that need to be charged. Â That may take some time because that doesn't happen very often. Â However I looked on the back of the chargers and found the following information. Â 1. Â Leica branded charger does 8.4V at .85A 2. Â Lenmar select 8.4V at 1000A. Â Â I got a degree in chemistry so electrical engineering is outside of what I know, but I would suspect the Lenmar might charge a hair faster? Â Maybe someone will chime in that actually knows something.
BCMielke Posted March 6, 2017 Author Share #6 Â Posted March 6, 2017 I have a further update. Â I have now charged batteries about 3 times with this system. To date I have had one issue with a battery that had completely died in the camera. The Lenmar charger mis-identified the voltage and charging stopped after a short period of time. The battery is 7.4 volts and it came identifying it as 6.2 volts. After I put the battery in it's OEM charger, it started charging. Midway through I took it off and put in on this system and it identified the correct voltage and finished off the charge.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted March 7, 2017 Share #7 Â Posted March 7, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the 109 charge off micro usb. The T does so there's one you don't "need" the charger for. Â Personally I take two chargers when I travel anyway, even if it's one camera. last thing I need is no pictures because my only charger dies first day. The Leica chargers can/do fail - I know by experience...
BCMielke Posted March 8, 2017 Author Share #9 Â Posted March 8, 2017 I agree. Â I have not had two chargers with me and have learned the hard way unfortunately. Â I also store a SD card in my wallet for emergencies and have a RRS allen wrench in every camera bag I own. Â

They work very well together on a multiple USB charger.  There are some other Nitecore chargers for some Leica cameras : M9, M240 and Q. They look interesting for the smaller size alone...Difficult to say without making a direct comparison. A nice feature is to be able to see on the screen (more or less) the level of charge.  The big pluses with USB chargers are that you can use them easily in a car with a small phone charger plug, or with many type of battery packs (for iPad, etc.) in the field, or with solar panels etc. Edited August 26, 2017 by Leicaiste
robgo2 Posted August 26, 2017 Share #15 Â Posted August 26, 2017 The nitecore charger looks interesting! Anybody who knows a nitecore dealer in europe or a shop that ships to germany? I just ordered two (one for the SL and one for the Q) from Amazon in the U.S. I think they will be great for travel. I also bought a two port USB charger from Amazon Basics. steppenw0lf Posted August 27, 2017 Share #16  Posted August 27, 2017 (edited) The nitecore ULSL looks great - unfortunately I cannot find it anywhere - out of stock in those places that offer it. I also could not find any offers on amazon.com  About the time of charge: Is the speed the same as the ordinary charger ? Or is it slower (because USB is probably limited in power)  ? pop Posted August 27, 2017 Share #17 Â Posted August 27, 2017 The shop whose address is given in #12 above says they have 96 copies on stock. They sell to Switzerland.
robgo2 Posted August 27, 2017 Share #18  Posted August 27, 2017 (edited) Here is the link to it on Amazon. Unfortunately, it is now listed as "unavailable" with no info on when they might have it back in stock. This thread may have caused a run on it.  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074XG46SB/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  Fortunately, you can get it directly from the Nitecore Store.
