Loose R lens focusing ring

The focusing ring on my 1:4 /80-200 lens does not hold it's setting, tending to reduce focus at full or near full focal length. My other zoom lenses hold their setting perfectly.

Are there any suggestions for a quick fix or is this a job for Leica?

Thanks Charlie,

It's strange as this morning it seems to keep it's settings OK. I am wondering it it's a temperature thing as it is cooler this morning than it was 2 two days ago when I had the problem.

They all behave differently hot to cold. Lense will feel one way in the morning and another in the mid day sun. Then it rains and they feel different again. Yours probably needs a service if it bugs you, and apologies to the people who never notice and think Leica builds are ducks guts. Shutter release R9 ditto, it gets real cranky.

Thanks Rob, I guess it's a tolerance or gease type thing. It wasn't that warm on Sunday in England but the R9 was getting a little warm on the top plate as I was shooting at an airshow all day. My face is showing the signs of warm weather anyway!

I also noticed that it was possible to turn the ring beyond the infinity mark and start to lose focus again.

Prints all good? I know my favourite 50/1:1.4 rattles and the retainer ring at the back was loose ...how?... till I tightened it back up. It should go for a service but I never get round to it and it works fine. I cant pick anything in the prints.

Sounds like you have a mechanical problem with the lens.

It should not pass the infinity line.

2 Questions,

How far past the infinity line does is turn ?

Has the lens ever been serviced/taken apart ?

Some lenses are intenstionally designed to go past the infinity mark - I have a 280 f4 and its handbook explains the reason - because infinity can "float" on telephoto lenses depending on ambient temperature. If you look at the picture of the 80-200 from the technical data file (I cannot get the copy paste function to work) you can just see its past the infinity mark as well. Check the little manual that comes with the lens - it could be an intentional design!
