merrillh Posted June 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) New to this forum, and would like everyones input on my choice to go digital. A little background on my camera experience. I currently have 2 Nikons ( please do not dislike me for this), the coolpix SQ, P&S and the N80 film, with the 28-80mm lens and a Tamron 70-300mm lens. We are going to Africa and want to take pics of the animals. I could buy the D80 and use my current lens. But I do not want to lug this equipment around, but I need the telephoto capability. The Leica V-LUX-1 seems like the way to go, and it looks like a great unit. Leica has always had a great rep. In all the research that I have done, you can imagine the amount of input that you get, ie; soft pictures, noise etc. It seems to me that I can get some great pictures with this camera. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Merrillh

spylaw4 Posted June 18, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 18, 2007 Welcome to the forum - if you dig around you should find some V-lux-1 images in both the Digital Forum and spread around the photo forum but i am not sure if there have been many recently. Maybe others can assist further.

It works perfect even at 420mm equivalent (although Leica cautions in the manual and recommend a tripod/monopod). I want to highlight the feature "Extended Function" EF. When you reduce from 10 MB to 2 MB and switch Digitalzoom to 4x, the camera automatically enlarges the middle section of the sensor up to an 3000mm tele-equivalent. That off course needs a tripod, but in certain situations you will be happy to have such supertele functionality in such a compact camera. Enjoy your journey and the V-Lux 1. rsh Posted June 18, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 18, 2007 Great Camera. Great Travel Camera. Great Family Camera. I carry it and a D-Lux 3 together.
luigi bertolotti Posted June 18, 2007 Share #5 Posted June 18, 2007 I made 3 shots with the V-lux of a friend, this is my only experience... but looked a fine camera to me, zooming was exceptional (for one who still uses single focus lenses only...) and handling is pleasant. In the forum you can find pictures that, for what I can say, demonstrate that OIS DOES WORK (somewhere you can find impressive pictures at 1/4s or so, I remember...); and seems to me that I have never read a significant complaint about this camera into our forum. No real WA...this maybe is the only limitation.
rsh Posted June 18, 2007 Share #6 Posted June 18, 2007 One other thing, it is worth the extra money to buy the V Lux over the FZ 50 for both the warranty and the resale value.
merrillh Posted June 18, 2007 Author Share #7 Posted June 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for your input, I have looked at pictures from the V-lux in pbase and flickr. It is tough judging these on the internet, some are great and some are not so great. This with pictures from all cameras. I have found that there is a big and constant battle comparing the V-Lux and FZ50 going on out there. I have always bought the best that I could afford, and just holding the Leica you can tell a lot about it. I have not found the FZ50 to be able to do the same. It seems that the Pano people are fighting with a petition to get them to upgrade the firmware. I get the feeling that Panasonic is not responding to the request. I have several Panasonic products and have been very happy with them. So do not want to bash them in anyway. This is just about preferance. I guess that my problem is that the old Nikon N80 film camera takes such wonderful pics, will I be disappointed with a digital bridge camera vs a DSLR? Kevin_B1 Posted June 19, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 19, 2007 I have been looking at getting a V-Lux 1 and after trying it out found the camera was great but I did not like the electronic viewfinder. I may have got used to it but my initial thoughts were it was horrible to look through so I decided against it and bought a Leica D-Lux 3 which is very nice. Not the same, as you want it for the longer lens length, but when you test it I would be intrested to see what you think of that viewfinder. regards Kevin
rsh Posted June 19, 2007 Share #10 Posted June 19, 2007 The viewfinder does not bother me, especially given the superlative results the camera gives.
joachimeh Posted June 19, 2007 Share #11 Posted June 19, 2007 The viewfinder does not bother me, especially given the superlative results the camera gives. ... this electronical viewfinder has an electronic magnifier function which is very helpful to manual focussing ... Fokus Posted June 21, 2007 Share #12 Posted June 21, 2007 One other thing, it is worth the extra money to buy the V Lux over the FZ 50 for both the warranty and the resale value.^ It´s not olny the resale value or repeutation, because reputation allways follows the quality. The FZ 50 cannot -at least that´s my impression- use all the opportunities the Leica has . For me the FZ 50 is a reduced version. I decided to buy the V-LUX 1 because I wanted to have what the Leica engineers wanted to invent. My experience with that camera is very good and I am very satisfied. Greetings from Berlin to the States Fokus
