re Image Editing - Does anyone know whether DNG files from M10 can be handled directly by older versions of Lightroom - specifically LR 3.6 - Grateful for any answers - Tony Cole

Tony,

The DNG files can be opened in most any application that supports raw files including LR 3.6, although to get the most benefit out of the files I recommend upgrading to the latest version of LR. Version 6.8 supports the correct color profile for the M10.

If I purchase lightroom 6 standalone (i.e., not the cc package), will that be lightroom 6 and include the M10 profile?

When you buy LR6 and install it on your system, you have LR 6.0.

The very next thing you should do is run LR and use the Help > Updates menu command. This will update the Adobe Application Manager on your system and provide you access to download and install LR 6.8. It's a free update. You need LR 6.8 to have the profile for the M10.

ok got it and thanks.  another question, if i have been using a free cc trial and i want to switch out of cc and into a fixed lightroom 6 situation, how will that work?  will I loose the photos/work that I undertook in the lightroom cc app?  thanks...

save your library, and it couldn't hurt to do a backup as well. Then completely uninstall CC before installing 6.0. (but not the library)

Having both installed causes issues, so make sure you uninstall the Creative Cloud updater app as well...it will reinstall this damn app when you install the standalone app which is quite annoying.

Your Lightroom catalog (default or not) is completely independent of the Lightroom application. For safety's sake, locate your catalog folder (you can use the button in Lightroom Preferences to do that) and make a backup of it.

Then uninstall LR and Creative Cloud. There should be an uninstaller app provided in the installation package. Once you've completely removed LR and all of the CC apps, then install LR6. If you used the default catalog when you were using LRCC, it will just open by default when you run LR 6.

Ok thanks very much... one last question for those that actually have your m10's... when I got mine somewhere in there was a code for a free 90 day cc trial... I can't seem to fins that now.... does anyone happen to know where that was within the various elements of the Leica M10 packaging?

Just go to Leica owners site:

You also need check the OS requirement for later than 6.0, eg on my early iMac checking for updates just prompts the notice 'fully up to date' (ie OS inadequate!).

No! Don't do that.

When your trial period is about to expire then purchase a product key. You can either buy a key for the Adobe Photography Plan (which is a CC subscription including Bridge, Camera Raw, Photoshop, and Lightroom) or buy a key for Lightroom 6. Whatever you get—simply enter that product key into your Lr CC trial version and, depending on what type of key you have, it will turn into Lr 6 or Lr CC. This will also work after your trial period has expired. No uninstall/re-install cycle required.

No, you won't.

By the way, Lightroom 5.7.1 also will digest DNG files from the Leica M10 happily. Most likely, so will even older versions but Lr 5.7.1 is what I tried.

All versions of LR will open a DNG, but only the latest (v6.8) will have the color profile for the M10

I would advise a clean install...this causes issues when updating to 6.8

This is true.

My assumption is that you should always keep the OS up to date. At various points along the way, this implies new hardware. Any system more than five-six years old is likely to need a hardware update as well as an up-to-date OS to use the latest apps with good performance.

I'm probably running near the limit of my hardware at this point ... my Mac mini is mid-2012 generation ... so I expect to need a new computer within the next year or two if I want to stay on top of the latest OS and app revisions. A new, up-to-date computer is less expensive than a new Leica body or lens, and is just as important to my photography if not more so. :)

Of course, if I don't buy any new cameras that need later revisions of Lightroom, and I'm happy with the way current LR 6.8 and other apps work, I don't have to update anything at all. :D

What you consider a 'clean install' actually is totally pointless. Because there is no difference whatsoever between Lr 6 and Lr CC. An uninstall/re-install cycle just removes and then re-installs the very same thing. Whether it behaves like Lr 6 or Lr CC just depends on the type of the product key used for activation.

Sorry, but it wasn't pointless for me. Maybe you didn't have issues. I couldn't upgrade to 6.8 and followed the advise of Adobe and with a clean install all is now working fine.

It doesn't wipe your Library, so no harm done regardless. But do a search and you'll find hundreds of topics on the issue along with Adobe support recomendations.

YMMV...but I kept trying to update and it said no update available. After a clean install the upgrade from 6 to 6.8 was seamless.
