TCEH Posted February 3, 2017 Share #1  Posted February 3, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi!  I need a good advise! What lens would you recommend? I will mainly use the lens for shooting at zoological gardens.  The Leica Leitz Wetzlar MR-Telyt-R 500mm 1:8 for $812 dollar or   the Leitz Elmarit-R 180mm f:2,8 2 kam for $363. Thank you and all the best! Robert E Posted February 3, 2017 Share #2 Â Posted February 3, 2017 Tom, Â That 500mm is going to see a lot of camera shake in the view finder. I've been using my Nikkor 200-500 E AF-S lens on my SL with the SL/NIK adapter. It does give fairly quick AF and AE but no IS with the long lens. Some kind of rest or monopod is going to be a must as I can't see a tripod at a zoological gardens. Just letting you know my experience. denisavu Posted February 4, 2017 Share #3 Â Posted February 4, 2017 Hi Robert, Â How has your experience been using the SL/NIK adapter with Nikon's E-lens? Â Thanks for your thoughts, Â Denis

Tom H    Yes, you can use on the SL. Focusing is easy with the EVF of the SL, but Little chance to get sharp fotos without tripod Contrast is low. You can improve this in LR, but it´s not the same as a high contrast lens Focal length is too long for the big animals Although I have it, I rarely use it.  I fear any plastic zoom will do a better job.  Here is a shoot with the MR 500. Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted February 4, 2017 Share #5 Â Posted February 4, 2017 By now these lenses are a bit dated and most will need a good clean to get the contrast you want. They are capable of good, but not outstanding, image quality. For shooting in zoological gardens (i.e. you get close to the animals and you shoot from a fixed point), I would recommend something like a 70-200 zoom lens. TCEH Posted February 4, 2017 Author Share #6  Posted February 4, 2017 Thank so much you for very informative answers!  Think that I will go for the Leitz Elmarit-R 180mm f:2,8 2.  Best!  Tom H
Leicaiste Posted February 4, 2017 Share #7 Â Posted February 4, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) Think that I will go for the Leitz Elmarit-R 180mm f:2,8 2. Â Best! Â Tom H I don't think two cams lenses will attach to the Leica R adapter SL. Â You will need the Novoflex adapter R-SL or the stacked Leica M-SL plus R-M adapters. Leicaiste Posted February 4, 2017 Share #8  Posted February 4, 2017 From Leica website  "The Leica R-Adapter L supports all Leica R-Lenses with a ROM module and contacts, and automatically detects the profile of each lens. This solution provides compatibility with the majority of R-Lenses manufactured after 1976.  An alternative option caters for R-Lenses without ROM or those built before 1976: combining an M-Adapter L with an R-Adapter M provides a solution that is compatible with all Leica R-Lenses ever built. The lens profile can be selected from the list of lenses within the camera menu. mmx_2 Posted February 4, 2017 Share #9 Â Posted February 4, 2017 Get yourself a nice copy of the Vario-Elmar 80-200 f4, it's and excellent lens also by modern standards. If you combine it with the apo-extender you will almost have the same reach (and same aperture) as the MR lens but with much better performance. Leicaiste Posted February 5, 2017 Share #11 Â Posted February 5, 2017 Yes, it not clear. Â The R-Adapter SL accept R three cams lenses, R cam only lenses and R ROM lenses. Â The SL can only recognize automatically ROM lenses. Â Don't try to attach one or two cams lenses, they could destroy the ROM contacts inside the R-Adapter SL, on the R mount side. mmx_2 Posted February 6, 2017 Share #12 Â Posted February 6, 2017 And here are three examples from Zoo in Copenhagen with the Vario-Elmar 80-200 + APO-extender (and M240, but SL should give similair results): Â
