M10 or SL

I purchased the SL new because I need a zoom to do tech scouts for film work. I liked the 24-90 zoom, the amazing evf, and most of all - a far newer and improved sensor over the MP240. I have a good stock pile of M lenses. With this new M10 I see an at least equal sensor, a usable evf, and I've since realized I can get a 28-90 R that will give me a zoom for scouts. I don't use ANY of the other SL features like video, etc. I just take photos and sometimes use the wifi. Anybody else thinking about dumping the SL? I do love the camera, but sometimes when it's just an M lens like a 28 summilux having a M camera makes some sense. Thanks in advance friends.

I just did the exact same thing. Selling the SL now as the M10 arrived Friday. The SL is very nice, but I like to keep a camera with me 24/7 and I really missed my M. (I sold the M240 to get the SL)

The new M10 is the best digital Leica yet...love it.

The only thing you will regret is the money your going to lose selling the SL. Used prices are extremely low.

I'm not giving up my SL - it is an ideal landscape camera, both the 24-90 and the 90-280 are great lenses, and it makes the Nocti work. It's a pretty incredible full-featured camera. I'll use it out West, for wildlife photography, and some still lifes. I'm glad I had it for my son's graduation, and before that, his lacrosse games. But take it out on the streets? No way!

The M10 seems to have a great sensor, it is wonderful in the hand, I can use all my M lenses accumulated over the years, and using it is second nature. It is the apex of M usability, a brilliant exponent of a brilliant system.

If I had to choose, I would chose the M10, because I got on fine for 15 years shooting only an M and I just got the SL a year ago.

But if it is financially possible to have both, wow, are they a great one-two combo.

Not really. It will still be smaller and the focus zoom is still there. The only thing you lose is the resolution of the EVF which is really nice, but not critical to nailing focus with those lenses. I don't agree that the SL would be easier or more accurate.

They are complementary camera systems .... both suited for different tasks, and in a perfect world you would be better to have both.

Despite the size, if forced to choose I would keep the SL as it offers AF, OIS and the option to use M & R series lenses as if using a RF/SLR as the EVF is close to optical in use.

The real test is what you end up using most ....... I have M240, Monochrom, T, Q and SL ........ and the SL produces 90% of my images.... and the % of technically good images is much higher than with the M.

If I added an M10 I doubt this pattern would change much after the initial enthusiasm had paled .....

At the end of the day the camera that you use is the one that puts a smile on your face..... despite its quirks or irritations. Go with what you like, rather than what you think you need.  ;)

And what has that got to do with anything? Looks like it was a failure in the 70s and is hardly worth remembering now.

Wikipedia, the font of all facts:

The Leicaflex was the first series of 35mm single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras manufactured by Leitz. The Leicaflexes were fully mechanical cameras marketed between 1964 and 1976, in response to the rapid increase in popularity and usability of SLRs during this period. Their appeal was limited by their failure to keep pace with the state of the art in SLR design, their somewhat limited selection of accessories, and their extremely high price in comparison with their Japanese competitors.

Sounds just like the SL ...

It has to do with the through-the-lens-versus-rangefinder debate that has been raging since the middle of last century. Let's not pretend that we have to invent the wheel all over again.

Those who prefer a TTL system - i.e. a system that will allow you to see the image that is being made will prefer the SL, those who prefer to see their surroundings through a viewfinder and select the image from there  will prefer the M10. Nothing has changed.

BTW, the real advantage of the SL  Leicaflex was the exceedingly clear viewfinder. Nothing has changed indeed.

I use the SL with the Noctilux and summilux 75. Just for that reason, I'll keep the SL because it's easier and more accurate to focus with.

The size of the M10 is a real advantage... but you lose it when you'll use the visoflex.

Right. Both are specialists on their tasks. As "allrounder" the SL is just the best you can find (for Leica)

but for travel, street and reportage the M ist still the master !

The majority of the M lenses being easier to use on the SL in my experience, it would make me a masochist.

If an L camera comes out with the M body form factor including the SL EVF, I would buy it as a second body for my small sized M lenses.

And some people like both, depending on what they are photographing and how. It doesn't have to be binary.
