I know that my calendar says it’s 2022, but so much of what I “think” is rooted in the old days, as I was growing up.  Anything over ISO 500 would result in a horrible, grainy and noisy photo.

I’ve been watching the “Red Dot Forum” videos on YouTube, which mostly are about Leica.  They said this ridiculous statement that I can easily get good, useable photos at ISO 5000.  I was skeptical, but wanted to try it anyway.

As it was getting dark outside, one cruise ship was still at its dock.  I started shooting some photos, taking the last one at 7pm - it wasn’t quite “night” yet, but it was darker than I would want to photograph anything without a flash.  Here’s the photo, edited in DxO PhotoLab, with their latest noise reduction software.  I shrunk it down to “only” 1800 pixels wide, for easier emailing.

I was  once again rather surprised, as when I look at the edited image, it doesn’t seem to have suffered much from using such a high ISO, nor does it look like this is a highly cropped photo, which it very much is!  I used my 135mm Tele Elmar, at f/5.6, and wondered what the result might look like…..

I don’t plan to walk around with my camera set to ISO 5000 or 10000, but if I’m walking around at night, and that’s what it takes, I think I will like the results.

Leica M10, 135mm Tele Elmar at f/5.6

Sunrise this morning, put my 50mm Voigtlander APO Panther on my M10, as the sunrise was almost over.  Lights were still on, on the ships.  This isn't exactly the image I was hoping for, but it does show what I "felt".

Morning light lends great qualities to this subject.   re: hoping for....happens to me so often I am surprised when it does 🙂

Update - I didn't like the way the cropping took away so much of the image:

I had all these emotions because of the "morning light", but I would struggle to attempt to put them into words.  I was still in my night clothes when I glanced outside, and rushed to get my camera (hmm, which camera, Nikon or Leica) and then to figure out which lens (35, 50, 135??).  Five seconds later the 35 came off, the 50 went on, and I was rushing to get the photo.

Rule for me, from now on.  Always put the camera on my tripod.  By the time I was thinking about that, the light was gone.

My M10 and my D780 both have 24 megapixel sensors, but my gut feeling is the Leica gets me the best images.

When you see this kind of light, which camera and/or lens are you most likely to go for?  Can you please post a few of your early morning photo pictures here?

(It wouldn't go in this thread if I actually do so, but I have a very strong desire to take the comparable photo using my M8.  Different sensor, less resolution, but lovely color.  I'll try to do it, maybe even tomorrow morning if the lighting is good.)

If you're playing with crops, how about an intermediate one? Keep all the foreground (where you have managed to avoid chopping any boats in half, which can't have been easy!) but lose some of the plain sky at the top. so that the horizon is roughly on the top third rather than in the middle.
