Farewell MV Steve Irwin!

This is MV Steve Irwin, the former flagship vessel of Sea Shepard Conservation Society. It was built in 1975 and first served as a patrol boat for the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency. It was bought by Sea Shepard in 2006 and served on multiple whale defence campaigns under this organisation. Between campaigns, it was usually moored in the Melbourne seaside suburb Williamstown. Sea Shepard retired the vessel in 2018. Since then, it has been moored in Williamstown. It hosted a pizzeria for a while, but this business had to close when the dilapidated adjacent pier was closed for safety reasons. Tomorrow, the Steve Irwin will leave Williamstown for good. It will be towed by tug boat Molly Grace to Newcastle, New South Wales, before it continues its final journey to Brisbane, Queensland.

My family and I will miss the Steve Irwin. It has been part of the Williamstown maritime precinct for many years and we feel that it just belongs here. We were always happy to see it back in port after returning from its whale defence campaigns and we liked to see its diverse international crew around town. They once advertised half-jokingly to apply for a job if you were interested in a one-way ticket to (a prison cell in) Japan. The photo below shows MV Steve Irwin on its last evening in Williamstown, being prepared for its final journey.
