M10 Accessories - Thoughts

Just wanted to provide some thoughts on the new M10 accessories.

If you are a handgrip users I recommend trying it out before paying the $375.00. I have medium to large hands (can palm a basketball) and the handgrip was uncomfortable to me because the grip ends further away from the shutter than I experience with the M240. In order for my "trigger finger" to reach the shutter I had to rest my pointer above the grip. The grip is somewhat angular which would cause a lot of pain after a long day unless you rigged some sort of pad.

The thumbs up is fantastic and even better than the Match Technical version as far as looks and usage for the M240 variations. The positioning and feel on the M10 is great with this.

In playing around with the M246 and M10 the last two days I actually prefer the size of the M246. Again, my hands are medium to large as I am 6' 1". This is obviously all personal preference. I also do not notice any weight differences between the camera. The size difference is noticeable but not weight. This opinion very well could be coming from using M240 variations over the past 3 years and having a comfort level.

I also didn't like the half case and would opt for another brand. The Leica half case cuts off too low on the camera in my opinion. I do think this is the best half case of the ones I have seen from Leica as it fits more snug. I typically do not use these unless its freezing outside but wanted to share my opinion. Because the half case sits low the grip wasn't a sufficient add for my hand.

I am still working on a strap option for the camera as Jono has eluded to the fact that straps with thicker ends, toward the rings, causes scuff marks in a month or so. The strap that comes with the camera is a let down and seems very cheap for a 6.5K camera but I am used to that after owning many.

The supplied strap is one step better than no strap. Straps are very personal and usually the first accessory people buy, ok maybe after an extra battery. I don't think it would matter what Leica put in the box no one will use it so why increase the cost for something people won't use.

The half case also doesn't have a connection for a tripod.

For the M8 i got a "Luigi"halfcase with a tripod screw. Even if I use it for almost ten years now, I am cursing this screw every day I don't forget it's there. You may fix it with the case on a tripod, but with less stability than without the case. Something from the case is always in your way when you use the camera on tripod. Each time you have to take off the case (batteries, SD-Cards etc) it is difficult  to unscrew it and to fix it again afterwards.  It's a nuisance and good for nothing.

I've always used the supplied strap into now. This one feels stiff and cheap. Made myself another one with some lovely oil tanned leather. The rings that come with the M10 are nice though :)

The requirement to have the Visoflex attached to get GPS is a bit cumbersome.  It would be great if Leica, or someone, produced a small GPS only accessory shoe attachment.  Given the size of GPS chips perhaps it could be almost as small as the provided accessory shoe cover.

I ordered the thumb rest and the screen protector to go with my M10. I've never used a thumb rest before but the Leica one seemed to give good support to the camera. As for the screen protector it is a clear film and having had a chance to compare prices I'd recommend buying a third party one and paying far less.

I'm thinking of buying a stick on clear plastic cover to use instead of the film. I had one on my M-E and the only drawback was that some dust was blown inside the protector by my breath when I held the camera to my eye. Although the protector was stuck to the screen surround there was obviously a tiny air gap.

Because of my concerns over the lack of plastic scuff protectors on the M10 I'm going to use the Artist and Artisan ACAM100 strap as I did with the M-E. It is adjustable and has a soft leather protector between the ring and the camera body.

I ended up missing the flexibility of the original Leica strap, so made a modification.  Double thickness webbing + oil tanned leather + thin leather protector and the original Leica split ring.  This works for me (and if you're wondering, the scotch tape on the body is holding my diopter in place until I get the thread adapter - should be with me the beginning of next week  ;) )

Anyone know if this will work with the M10: SCA Adapter Set for Multifunctional Handgrip M, if so in some situations my wireless trigger could be on the SCA and the Viewfinder in the flash socket. Or my SF-40 in the flash socket and another flash on the SCA.

It's the best. I use it on both my MM1 and M240, and will do so on my M10  :)

Many forum members and Leica camera owners used the nylon straps that Leica included with the M240 and film versions for years....Excellent strap.

Lots of people also used the nicer leather strap that came with the MM1.

I totally disagree. If Leica provided their new style leather strap that was recently released I think many customers would be more than satisfied. Otherwise, why are people buying that strap? Sure, colors choices.

Nope. No multifunction hand grip for the m10, so the SCA adapter doesn't work.

I like the idea of the GPS but I don't need the Visoflex. A stand alone  GPS is a great idea, or a GPS incorporated into a Thumbs UP would be ideal for me.
