KJB Posted June 17, 2007 Share #1 Posted June 17, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Let me start by saying that I love the fingerprint of both of these lenses. So I'm thinking of selling the Nocti to get the 75lux...am I crazy? Anyone else do something similar and have regrets? I would prefer a 3 lens lineup. I am currently looking for a used 35lux apsh so if you are thinking of selling one PM me! I have the 21asph, will get the 35lux asph, and will either keep the Nocti or swap it out for the 75lux... Which would you go for and why?? Most of what I shoot is travel and family. Ken
Advertisement Posted June 17, 2007 Posted June 17, 2007 Hi KJB, Take a look here Noctilux or 75mm Summilux. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
huwge Posted June 17, 2007 Share #2 Posted June 17, 2007 How often to you need the extra stop advantage of the Noctilux? I love my 75 'lux. It is more forgiving in focus than the Nocti and the bokeh is a little more consistent. You need to bear in mind that both lenses, with the M8 crop factor, are long and behave differently than with film. You may find the 75 a little tight for family shots. I will get another Nocti at some point, but for the time being I can live without it. I am not sure that I could say the same about the 'lux.
Eoin Posted June 17, 2007 Share #3 Posted June 17, 2007 Interesting, why are you considering the 75 over your Nocti?. Is it focal length that is the decisive factor or something else. I have a 75 Summicron which I got for portrait type stuff and found the framing a little harder than with the 50. The Cron while a super proved a little to stark compared to what I was looking for and I'm searching for "that look" which I hope will manifest it's self in my 30% off Nocti. I had originally planned for a 3 lens setup of 21 Elmarit Asph, 35 Summilux Asph and 75 Summicron Apo Asph, but I'm more inclined towards the 28 Summicron Asph and the Nocti. So if your interested in a perfect focusing Chrome 35 Summilux Asph and the Nocti delivers for me perhaps we could talk.
carstenw Posted June 17, 2007 Share #4 Posted June 17, 2007 They are both really classic lenses, and I would say that with time, anyone with an interest and the ability to do so should have both. I have the 75 Lux (which I consider to be the better lens of the two, although clearly the Noctilux has its strengths), but I plan to get the Noctilux one day when I can. Primarily considering the 75lux over the Nocti because of closeness in focal length. Not sure that I would carry both of them and I prefer not to have a lens sitting mostly unused. I'm looking for the right look as well over pure sharpness. That's the reason I'm would go for the 75lux over the cron for the same reasons I prefer the 35lux over the 35cron. The crons seem to be a bit too contrasty on the M8. I'm hoping to find a black 35 lux asph to pair with my black M8 but thanks for the offer.

Another vote for the 75lux over the Nocti. I am starting to see a trend here in favor of the 75lux. Carsten I would love to have both but wonder if I would ever carry both the 75lux and the Nocti in the bag considering their size and weight. It's helpful to know that you have a higher opinion of the 75lux.
jaapv Posted June 18, 2007 Share #8 Posted June 18, 2007 According to DOFMaster DOF on both lenses is the same wide open, but my feeling is that the bokeh gradient is sweeter on the 75. And the 75 is sharper at smaller apertures than the Noctilux. So I would go for the Summilux 75, if you can live with the smaller FOV and slightly shorter minimum shutterspeed when handholding. lightpainter Posted June 18, 2007 Share #9 Posted June 18, 2007 I own both lenses; although I have the 50 lux asph as well, i would not let the Noctilux go because of its characteristics; with the M8, i find the 75 lux a bit difficult at times since it is in fact a 100mm tele which is too much for many portraits; on the other hand, it's welcome if you can't get close enough; my advice is: keep your eyes open and get both of them, maybe s/h; they are great lenses
j. borger Posted June 18, 2007 Share #10 Posted June 18, 2007 I had both the nocti and 75 lux at the same time for about half a year. In the end i decided to keep just one and that was the 75 lux ..... In my opinion the 75 lux draws nicer and is more versatile ..... The longer focal length + the fact it focusses down to 0,7m (istead of 1m of the nocti) makes it more usable for portraiture! I loved my Noctilux on the R-D1 but did not like it very much on the M8 ....
