In 1988 Gabriel's Wharf, originally a timber yard owned by the Gabriel family in the early 1800's, was re-opened as a space where a number of independent and unique artisanal traders could ply their wares. Earlier this month, sadly, the traders currently operating in the wharf were given notice to vacate the site before the end of October 2026. Plans are in place to redevelop the area with the construction of a 72-bed nursing home but, inexplicably, the timeframe for this development is stated to be 'between 15 and 20 years'. To describe details of what is to happen in that very long intervening period as vague would be an understatement of considerable proportions... Philip.
