This copy of the lens came into my possession through a trade deal. When I compared it to the copy I have owned for a few years, I observed some fairly significant differences and started digging further. Information is scarce and scattered across various sources, so I figured I’d briefly summarise what I have learnt here, in case someone is interested and for future reference:

Made in LTM by Tokyo Kogaku for the Leotax rangefinder series of cameras from 1946/7 to 1954/5, when it was superseded by the Topcor 50/1.5.

Optically, it’s an intriguing hybrid Sonnar (front) / Planar (rear) design, which appears to have somewhat evolved over time. Glass seems to have been initially imported from Germany, then produced locally in Japan. Build quality is impressive: it's a very dense, all-brass lens, just like its contemporary Canon or Nikkor cousins.

3 versions were made:

  • V1: body shows 4 finely knurled rings, filter thread is 39mm, s/n are in the 150xxx range, likely the rarest version, said to be made with German glass.
  • V2: 5 rings, 40mm filter, s/n in the 151xxx range, seems to be the one most frequently encountered.
  • V3: 3 rings only, 40.5mm filter thread, s/n in the 152xxx range, looks pretty much identical to the Topcor 50/1.5 that replaced it (and that continued the Simlar’s numbering sequence, with s/n in the 153xxx range).

Therefore, no more than 3,000 Simlars were produced in total, although anecdotal evidence from looking at serials of previous sales suggests that the version allocations of 1,000 units were not fully utilised. The number of Simlar lenses actually manufactured is probably well under 2,000. Coatings were very soft - finding a copy (in any version) without cleaning marks or scratches on the front and/or rear element is a very tough order. The Topcor's coatings were significantly improved.
