Wow now this brings back memories of my Mother's 280SL, which I was privileged to drive on some occasions in the early seventies. I was very sad when father had it resprayed and sold it as I could not afford to buy it. Otherwise it would still be mine. Such a pleasure to drive and now I am past middle age and the prices in Classic magazines!!! Thank you for the image mad my day.

Nice shots and nice lenses, michali! Might I ask a couple of questions regarding your pair of lenses shown here? First-off do you use live-view / a Visoflex with the J-3 and, secondly, what are the first two digits of your J-12?

The reasons I ask are (1) I'm curious to know whether you have focus issues with the J-3 on a Leica body (unless shims are used) and (2) I wasn't aware that (one prototype apart) the J-12 was available with the Black-Paint body before 1971 and cameras / lenses from the FSU happens to be an area where I have some amount of interest!

Just for a bit of fun here is my own '75 B-P J-12 on my 1930 Leica 1 - a combination which I find works beautifully well together;

Summaron 2.8 (1969) | MP(240)

very nice composition, quietglow. I love the corresponding curves--and the vignetting of the Summaron adds to the picture. Do you happen to remember the aperture you used ?

Thanks Philip. beautiful combination with your Leica 1!

I don't use live view, range finder coupling works with the Jupiter-3 & Jupiter-12. I have four copies of the J-3, one of which back focuses slightly, the other three are spot on with the RF.

The s/n of my Jupiter-12 is 6908210. As you know the 1st two digits represent year of manufacture. Apparently some black paint lenses were first made in 1969,  (I've also read 1971), I've previously come across another black paint J-12 lens with s/no. 69......  it was advertised on eBay not that long ago.

I have a pile of old Soviet lenses incl. Jupiter-9 f2 85mm in M42 mount , Helios/Zenit 44-2 f2 58mm M42, Jupiter-21M f4 200mm M42 mount.......  I like their rendering,  fun to use and to play around with and they punch way above their weight, for not that much money.

Thanks very much for the info, Mike; Interesting!

I, too, have quite a few FSU lenses which I use both on their intended bodies and also my Leica and Contax cameras. Unfortunately apart from the J-12 the only 'longer' f/length which focusses accurately on my M-bodies is a LTM 135 J-11 which cost me a whopping £19! I also have a J-11 which is a 110mm f4! Or at least that's what the engraving says it is...:lol:...

The J-12 on the Leica 1 is something I always take when I go on holiday. I'm not sure why but there is just something intangible about using it when in a carefree mood which I find deeply satisfying!

Thanks again!

Philip.

Fully agree Philip! In this age of of ultra-sharp, super-perfect, predictable lenses, of which I have many 🙄, I also find it so refreshing & satisfying to use less than perfect, unpredictable lenses.
