Yes, this is a common effect of the 35mm lux pre-asph when in back light or specular light situations, particularly evident when shooting wide open (which I always do). Are you using a filter? When using an older filter, not multi-coated, this effect is more pronounced. With a newer multi-coated filter, this effect is significantly reduced. Have fun, I love this lense while others look for the modern designs/calculations which have a very different feeling. Remember, this lense is a Mandler design, also responsible for the Noctilux; which is near impossible to flair but has other amazing characteristics when shot wide open.

Although very different subject matter, here is a snap from the Getty Museum garden. M8 b&w jpeg with absolutely no processing! 35mm f1.4 Summilux pre-asph w/poorly coated filter.

I like the glow for a picture like this. I also have that lens and have seen this effect many times. Even more than the glow, I like the expression on the young lady's face and your composition of the whole scene.

Probably because I don't own any fancy lenses..... but it just looks blurry to me. I think it is very pretty and well composed... but way too blurry for me. This is why people go to horse races and bet money.

Gunnar - The heck with all this lens talk ! - Take a good long look at what you have created here - (I assume this is your daughter) - this is without a doubt one of the finest, most insightfull, sensitive and beautiful portraits ever made - PRICELESS - absolutely stunning - the smile, the light, the moment - I can't say enough! Wonderful work!

As time goes by - as it does -very very fast with children, you will realize just how good this shot is and how precious this moment was - and how fast they grow up!!! Thanks for sharing and all the best - Peter

I use the old Super-angulon 3,4/21mm chrom (1964) a lot (a lot of my Bilbao pictures are done with this lens)..

.the old Summicron 35mm, chrom, 8 elements ..

..and sometimes the old Leica II with elmar 3,5/50mm...

Jan

Thanks Jan,

Looks like we have the same vintage favourites. I also have & love the 21/3.4, 8-elements 35mm and a Leica II with the 3,5/50 Elmar.

the Super-Angulon was my first love..:D ..and I use it for travel...the new 21mm has to stay at home..:D

regards,

Jan

Was this taken with the M8? The reason I ask is that I just noticed when I put my pre-asph 35 lux on the M8, something obstructs the focusing so it won't go all the way to infinity. I'm curious if anyone else has encountered this.

I would say it has a nice soft look....but not blurry. It's certainly something you'd want to be aware of with this lens in normal use of course....but it's a lovely portrait.
