wlaidlaw Posted December 28, 2016 Share #1 Posted December 28, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have recently acquired a 1934 Leica Model III Type F with a 5cm f2,5 Hektor lens. I wondered if Leica ever made a VALOO type lens hood with an internal slot which connects with the aperture control tab on the front of the lens. This avoids having to poke around down the front of a conventional lens hood. I have a VALOO for my 1931Nickel Elmar but having checked, it does not fit on the Hektor, as the lens surround on the Hektor is too large and the aperture tab slightly too wide. Anyone know? Both my 1951 Leica accessory book and my P-H van Hasbroeck Leica book are down at my other house in France, so I cannot look up myself. TomB_tx Posted December 28, 2016 Share #2 Posted December 28, 2016 I thought the VALOO was originally intended for enlarger use with an Elmar, where setting the aperture is very difficult without it. Since the Hector wasn't intended for such use I doubt if Leitz would have made an equivalent.
willeica Posted December 28, 2016 Share #3 Posted December 28, 2016 The VALOO was introduced in 1949 and as the Hektor was no longer in production at that stage there was no equivalent for the Hektor. The VALOO was intended mainly for the darkroom as an aperture changing device, but it saw more action as a hood because one did not have to change the hood in order to change aperture. There had been an earlier aperture changing only device (not a hood) for the Hektor called the VOOLQ. It was for darkroom use only with the VALOY enlarger. The Elmar equivalent was the VALAU. The only hood intended for the Hektor that I can find is the FIKUS which is for a variable number of focal lengths. It appeared in many variations over the years and some variants have differing adjustment marks for the Elmar and the Hektor/Summar to avoid vignetting with the wider aperture lenses. With the FIKUS, you still have to use the finger nail threatening method of changing aperture with the Hektor. William
wlaidlaw Posted December 28, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted December 28, 2016 William, Thanks for the info on the hoods. I have ordered a Fikus hood from Ffordes, who had a considerable selection of them. I went for a mid price at £30. People were asking a lot more that that on eBay.
