Philip, when I follow the link to my pictures, I still see them.

This is one of my pictures, clearly not deleted, just removed as a link. I send smugmug a mail. I very dislike this kind of behavior. It is absolutely not about the copyrights, just a matter of taste.

I received a mail from Paul. He is stating, the should be offline. So via the original link is it not reachable anymore. But the pictures are still at smugmug.

Guest Alexander Unruhe
. I will delete your photo, but could you please help me to find it?

Wow! This is exactly what we all love about people who infringe our copyrights!

They all think it's our responsibility to waste our time in assisting them in sorting things out.

I ever thought this might be a idea to collect them all and use it for a book, a slide show o. s. e.

but without selling them but of course they all should be named with the composer.

I really would not have a problem with publishing the mine ones.

Regards

On this forum we take copyrigt very seriously; a fair proportion of our members depend on it for their livelyhood.

I think it is clear that Paulus made an error of judgement but IMO it is important to maintain a sense of perspective. I doubt that there was any ill intent or attempt to profit from the copyright infringement and, suitably chastened, he will no doubt remove all the photos from his Smugmug account in due course.

Time for the thread to get back on-topic. Another snap of an MP.

Paul is removing everithing and as Martin wrote, If someone would like to use one of my pictures for an blog or whatsever non commercial site, I will give a permission, when I'll be asked upfront and photographer is clearly mentioned beside the picture.

I have mails from Paul and he is really putting effort in it to make things right.

I don't think anybody thought or implied otherwise.

I am really really sorry for all the inconvenience I have caused.

As I was saying earlier. I was not thinking properly. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I have not and never foreseen the implications of my gesture.

All I wanted, was to share al those wonderful photo's of the Mp and some M6 in a slide show with you. I put a lot of effort in it, just as service to you all. Just because it is so much easier to watch al those wonderful cameras go by in a slideshow, than to browse the forum site.

I did not think rightly about copyright violations, because I thought that it would be all right with you. I don't know why I did not think harder about this. Maybe because it was late in the evening, maybe because I don't think this way about people, not being a commercial photographer. I even asked you to react if somebody would mind.

This was very naive of me.

When I posted the link , I immediately got replies from people. From that moment, I tried to mend what was already unintentionally broken.

I deleted the link. I went to sleep. But in the morning I realised that what I had deleted was not enough and photo's still could be seen.

I did not realise that the " buy" button on smugmug was on, I never use it, and that people thought I was selling their photos!- It's a smugmug feature not mine.- I was shocked by the idea. It was never my intention to sell the photos. It was never my intention to use the photos commercially nor to put attention on my own website. If it was my intention to do that, I would have used the website in my signature for all these years.

I have spent this morning, in my breaks from work, ( I do not work as a photographer ) to delete the gallery of smugmug totally.

Because it was the first time that I deleted something in smugmug it wasn't easy for me and I asked help from smugmug. I got an e-mail that everything should be deleted now.

All this happened because I have not rightly forseen what I did. I have learned my lesson very well. The damage is terrible. I have learned the hard way, that the internet is a frightenly fast medium.

I never had a facebook account. I feel like the girl recently inI Holland, inviting everybody to her birthday on facebook and getting 15000 people in her backyard. Very stupid, that's what I have been.

I got an e-mail today that there is a chance that I loose my smugmug account altogether. 38 gigabites of photos, Thousands of photos I've made during three years would disapear because I made this stupid mistake.

I am very very sorry and it won't happen again. I hope you forgive me.

Paulus,

thanks for this detailed sorry-statement. It makes clear what you had in mind. I think the most damage is on your side after all this work and pain. It´s good you are now aware what can happen if you don´t ask if others copyrights are involved.

All the best to you,

Rona|d

p.s. Never trust an external storage medium only, so I hope you have your 38 GB of photos backuped on your own HDDs. Best in three copies and three different places (your house, a friends house or your bank safe etc.).

Paulus, I think your concept is a good idea, but in hindsight, the need for consent is painfully clear. How about trying again?

Sorry, I really deleted everything. Even the downloads on my harddisk. It's not possible to start again. I also have to wait what Smugmug will do with my account.

I got a mail from SmugMug. Please see it below:

Hi István,

Thanks for contacting SmugMug.

I checked the link you sent, both the image and the album were deleted by the user just after you sent this message to SmugMug.

Looks to be Paul got your message and removed the image(s).

@ Paul, if I can help to keep your storage, just let me know. I could send a mail to them to clarify this.

Well, I for one have no objection to Paulus using the the images of my MP (as uploaded by me to this forum for everyone to view) for his original intended purpose, as long as they are acknowledged as my copyright.

We all learn at some point in life that it can be better to sleep on a 'good idea' before actually pressing the button...
