Are things getting better?

A couple of months ago I used to log on to the forum as a matter of survival - What was happening with firmware? What was the latest profile fix to get rid of magenta? What was the news on the best IR cut filter?

Now I notice that we have postings with themes like "M8 more prone to getting dirty" or "Will this be used on the M9?", and I don't really feel excited any more. I'll be really pleased if the next firmware gives us a quiet more, really pleased, but that's about all I'm wishing for.

Personally I'm very happy that it's going in this direction. The M8 has become a centrally important tool for my work and I now feel able to depend on it. Off to Poland on Monday to do a documentary - and all I'll take with me will be two bodies and a range of lenses. And they'll all be packed in a little satchel, and no DSLR to weigh me down or stop me getting my carryon onto the plane.

Which isn't news...

Isn't it great that the M8 is getting boring!

I have to completely agree with you Chris. It seems that things have got much better, and now that we know what it takes to work around all the remaining issues, we have what I consider to be usable tools to work with. Flying with M8s is certainly a lot more pleasant experience than DSLRs :D

Now, if only I could find that "perfect" bag.... :D

... and many people even do not know M8 exists... two nights ago I was at a gym performance : good light, good positioning... ok for M8 /640 with TE 90... I saw a friend of mine (both our daughters were performing) with his bulk Canon DSLR with zoom... he looked at me saying "uh, always your usual old Leica ... really you do not like to go digital...": was a great satisfaction to reply "...not exactly my old M4..."

Thread hijack: ;)

Still using my old Omnitraveler by Lowe Pro. (Old shots)(yes, that is my toe )

It holds: 2 M8 bodies, lenses: 15,21,35,50,75,135, charger, battery, cards, arctic butterfly, filters, odds and ends, all in a very compact package, practical too, that fits exactly into a Pelican Case if needed.

Thanks.... but for airline travel I need to take all that plus a 15" MacBook Pro + PSU + Mouse :(

Things are getting better and threads are getting more boring. Thanks heavens for some of the issues not raising it's ugly head. All this is good but still some work for Leica to be done to fine tune it even more and also catch up to there backlog's in lenses and repairs. Be nice to have some o that delay and waiting time go away. Asi am here in NY for the last day than off to Germany i have both my Image Smith and my osker day bag for this trip. When traveling on board the Image Smith has 2 bodies and 6 lenses in it . The Osker is packed with my cloths with 2 lenses and the junk. i could not decide what to leave home and actually sent my wife back home with my 90 cron since I have the 90 macro . i thought maybe overkill to have both. i will say that it is so nice to travel like this with small bags. i honestly don't know if i could ever go back to a DSLR

Yes, the dust has settled alright and the confidence level has increased, at least mine has. I came back from an extended trip abroad. I took my M8 and 5 lenses (each with its own IR cut filter :D); although quite compact but the setup is still fairly heavy on the shoulder. However, I am happy to say that the M8 performed splendidly without any hitch. I had my Canon as a backup and to take shots at longer tele settings though.

Perception is a strange animal. The manner in which Leica was savaged for introducing a not-ready-for-prime-time product by some was juxtaposed by Leica fans the world over who kept after Leica to make improvements and get the product right and who stood by the company with continuous support. My M8 continues to perform as any other Leica I have owned. IOW, no problems whatsoever. And the more I use it the more confidant I am the unit will get the job done. Minor niggles aside the majority of those things promised initially for a digital rangefinder have come true with the M8. Thank you, Leica.

I like the Lowepro Omni as well, very good for a Leica M outfit because everything is there for immmediate access and you don't have to stack things like some sort of Japanese puzzle.

The issue is how do you handle that with a rigidly enforced rule of one item of carry-on if you also want to take a laptop. I looked at this:

Tumi Flugumhängetasche - TUMI Germany

which can hold the Lowepro bag and the laptop (in my case Sony SZ).

Problem is, that bag is £425 ($850) and only $495 in the US and Tumi impose restrictions on US vendors selling to Europe, just to keep the price at this ludicrous level, so I passed.

Still looking...

and while this is NOT a "lets all be nice to Leica" thread I want to give Leica UK kudos for turning round the coding of my 135 + coding and repair of my 35 in good time and being very flexible about re-arranging shipping address + to Leica M8 support at Solms for arranging to re-address my E60 filter so that I can get it prior to doing a job in Scotland. Throughout I've found both Leica UK and Solms to be really friendly cooperative people to work with. It may not be everyone's experience, but it is mine.

Forums like this have a life cycle (based on my experience with Canon gear): There is a heavy volume of posts early on dealing with (1) scarcity and backorders and who's got stock, (2) technical issues (there were many serious issues even in the case of Canon), bugs, work-arounds, fixes, and workflows, and (3) add-ons and enhancements.

After the issues are all resolved and understood the forum settles down to posts like "I borrowed my friend's 1DsII - IMHO the files aren't very sharp and the midtones lack contrast" or "I see red and green fringes in the corners of my pictures; is there something wrong with my camera?" or "Here's a shot of my cat Norman with my new 5D". Stuff like that. Oh and of course rampant speculation about the manufacturer's next model.

During the first phase the forum serves an invaluable function - this is the internet at its very best. The second phase is just occaisional good fun.

I'm delighted that we appear to be moving into the second phase.

This forum has been remarkably free of rants and personal attacks, and is generally kind to newcomers. It's a great resource.

Hear hear! -- I also know it's going to continue to be useful (GUY- CAN YOU HEAR US???) + an important place to be able to return to if problems do crop up (or we have things to celebrate or share...)

I have an old rolling computer carry-on I got years ago from CompUSA that holds my 17" laptop and the Omni traveller. I often put the Pelican outer case inside checked baggage for additional kit when needed.

I agree that things are working well. For our May, 12 day trip to France, the M8 had about 1700 exposures where only one was contaminated for an unknown reason. The M8 even got bounced a little when I missed a step. At a wedding a week after returning, there were no camera problems with 800 exposures. Very reliable with only a very occasional hickup.

For travel to match Euro carryon size, ThinkTank's Airport Acceleration did a great job of holding the M8 with 3 lenses; the D2X with 10.5, 12-24, 17-55 and 70-200; batteries; cards; etc, as well as a 12 Apple Powerbook. Not too good for walking around, however:) .

Whew! I'm glad things are settling into "pix of my cat" phase as well!

On the thread hijack--the perfect bag...

I've already said I like the Tamrac velocity bags for shooting with 2 M bodies, or 2 M bodies and a sDLR (there are many sizes). They're fast, weather-resistant, and easy to carry.

But if you need to have a laptop as well in the same bag, and take everything on the plane, you need this:

Professional photography equipment - camera bags, camera cases - from Think Tank Photo

Check the Urban Disguise 50. Should work for check-in and under-the-seat flying too.

Guy, if during your trip to Germany you will be in Berlin with time for a coffee somewhere, drop me a note, and we can try to arrange to meet.

Ditto for Frankfurt and surrounds...

a LUF legend is amongst us!
