New to Leica, hello everyone!

Good day everyone,

     I'm Thomas and I just purchased my first Leica last Thursday from the store in L.A.. The Q is quite the departure from the Nikon D500 I use. I am quite happy with it and with a little help from you good folks here, I hope to learn all the tips and tricks to make it everything I want it to be.

Here are a couple of basic questions I'm sure have been asked before...

What are you guys and gals using as far as in camera settings? I primarily do street/urban, some structure and landscape with macro now and again. I do all of my black and white conversions in Lightroom.

Where would I go, other than Leica, to find accessories for the Q? Straps, brackets, cases, etc.

Any and all help and formation is welcome. I am new to how forums work so if I do something that is faux pas please let me know. Thanks in advance for your help.

Thomas

For accessories I am using:

Match Technical Thumbs-Up: http://leicarumors.com/2015/08/10/match-technical-thumbs-up-ep-sq-grip-for-leica-q-now-shipping-currently-in-stock.aspx/

Lim's Case: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-Q-Typ-116-LIMS-LE-HCLCAQBK-Leather-Half-Case-Black-Screen-Protect-Film-/291881170631?hash=item43f57936c7:g:VyoAAOSwoBtW58Fv

The case I prefer over the Leica grip as it leaves the bottom door accessible to get at battery & SD card.

I just use the included strap, it's actually pretty great I think.

For settings I am shooting:

Focus -> AFs & Face Detection with AF assist lamp off

Metering -> Multi Point

OIS -> On

Scene -> PASM

White Balance -> AWB

Photo File Format -> DNG & JPG (so I can download JPG to iPhone on the go via WiFi app)

Acoustic Signal -> All OFF

Auto ISO -> Max exp = Auto / Max ISO = 12500

Auto Review -> Off

Power Saving -> Power Off = 5min / LCD off = 1min

Zoom/Lock Button -> Digital Zoom (which I never use)

Thumbwheel -> Auto

Photo Live View -> Level Guage = On / rest Off

Display Settings -> EVF-LCD = Auto / Eye Sensor Sensitivity = High (It's much less jumpy than my Sonys were)

Those all look like sensible settings to me, though I have autoreview on for 2 seconds - and keep the Auto IOS down to 6400.

Also, I change the Zoom/Lock button to AEL Lock (I too avoid the crop function).

The FN key is your friend when it comes to changing Focus methods – would be very nice if it were one of the Zoom/Lock button functions, or even the Video button (which I have set to Off). I have three of the four Function buttons set to different AF methods - Face Detection/Single Point/Touchscreen Shutter release. Otherwise changing focus methods is far too complex via the Menu.

The only accessory I use is a screen protector - I have the Leica one on at the moment but find the anti-reflective surface too coarse when viewing images, so am switching to a clear one.

I do like the Leica strap, but it's quite short – am thinking about a Sunlow thin and flexible one, so that I can wrap it around my hand for walking about...

I'm tempted by the Thumb's Up, but will try a bit of Sugru first - just around the thumb indent to make it a bit more secure, a dab around the EVF focus compensation dial to stop it being changed accidentally, and a dot of it on the FN button to make it easier to find.

Welcome Thomas.

Enjoy your camera...it's a good one by anyone's standards...and it's a Leica!

Do your own thing and choose your own settings, and equipment.

We look forward to your images, and input to the Forum; get involved.

all best.. Dave S

Thank you again everyone for the advise and warn welcome. I've been using the Leica strap and it is adequate for now. On my D500 I have a QED win and a Magpul sling off my RRS L-plate. It's a great method for me but seems a bit bulky for the Q. I'm hoping to post some photos end of week for people to enjoy, comment and critique.

Why?   OIS can contribute to soft images when not needed.  It also uses battery power (but I don't know how much).

Certainly, though with the Q, I find far less false-positive OIS-induced blur than with other systems. I think overall it's a much milder form of IS than other brands. It doesn't help for more than 2 stops maybe, but I also don't find a lot of false blurring. That said, I've read the Ming Thein article on the subject and agree.

It comes down to your shooting style/subjects. Most of my shooting is street, on the move.. where a little IS is helpful.

If you are doing a lot of architecture/landscape/etc, you probably want to default to OFF and enable as needed.

Maybe the next generation of IS will be slightly more programmable.

Like: ON, but only in effect for shutter EVs below X.

Welcome to the forum. I highly recommend a case as that will improve how the Q feels in the hand. I recommend Arte Di Mano. Straps, there are countless choices. Look thru the forum for older posts as this subject comes up a lot. Ditto for bags. There really isn't much to add to the Q other than strap and case that is really needed, other than extra batteries and cards. A good bag for toting around but then you could just wear it! It is so light. I rarely put mine in a bag.

Welcome Thomas!

I'm also new here, and also a happy Q-owner since today! (mine was second-hand though),

the guy i bought it from had these extra batteries from Chili Power that last just a bit longer then the Leica ones.

modelnumber is: CP-BLC12E   (info: 7.2V  -  1300mAh  -  9.4Wh)

Happy Q-ing!

Why?   OIS can contribute to soft images when not needed.  It also uses battery power (but I don't know how much).

When I was sorting out the settings on my Q I noticed that when switching the OIS off the camera made a soft click and the constant whirring heard on the Q went quieter.

I would recommend the side grip as this makes the camera mch more comfortable in the hand. I fitted the had strap by Artisan & Artist to the lug on the other side (ACAM295 in black).
