Ventilated Lens Shade for the Leica Q

Each to his/her own, I guess. BUT on a point of practical utility rather than aesthetics, does anyone know whether the Overgaard (red or black) actually shades the lens as well as the default version? Superficially I would say not given the distance of the outer edges from the glass of the lens but that may be an optical illusion. I would also be concerned about dust entering through the ventilation slots. The default version provides a relatively dust free enclosure.

i have the ventilated shade (in black)..

i did some shooting last weekend w/o my  polarizer and w/ the OEM lens shade. . .  i will truthfully say that the OEM lens shade in my opinion does a better job of shading the lens and obviously protecting it. . .

i never noticed dust accumulating on the polarizing filter (i have used Thorsten's lens shade for about a year now-- when shooting w/the polarizer )

Two things: Lee do sell lens shades that fit on their square filter frame and their square filters are not polarisers, although they do sell a circular polariser that fits in front of the square filter mount. Furthermore by the time you have got all of that in front of your lens it is providing something of a lens shade, although as I say they do sell a big square bellows type lens shade. The situation with a polariser fitted directly in front of the lens is almost no different in "shade" effect to having a clear protective filter fitted which a lot of people do as standard.

I am no pro but I do use the Lee set up - square filter holder and circular polariser - on my Nikon D800 and I agree I manage OK without their lens shade - although I know personally some pros who do add the lens shade. But as I have discribed the physical set up is quite different on the Q and, indeed, any camera where the circular polariser is mounted directly on the lens filter thread.
