platypus Posted November 9, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 9, 2016 Your garden sounds interesting, how about taking (and posting) some wide/long shots of it? I have no success with gardening, having somehow managed to kill off my lavender plants this winter, I am giving up.
david strachan Posted November 9, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted November 9, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now that's a Lavender. Actually a couple of plants grown from seedlings, and have to be cut back hard mid summer every year. In full flight it's getting toward 1.8m high. Pulled a whopper out yesterday...they do take over. But I love the bees. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! david strachan Posted November 9, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted November 9, 2016 It's only a suburban block...the old 1/4 acre (in fact 975 m2). But it does us. We've just pulled out a huge old passionfruit which had heavily suckered through the garden...never plant one called Ned Kelly. Our Limes and Lemons have been badly affected by Citrus Gall Wasp...a scourge hitting Australian citrus from the native Finger Lime industry. So we planted some more and cut the galls out of the older plants. (PS I like the colours from the M-P). Welcome, dear visitor! david strachan Posted November 9, 2016 Author Share #9 Posted November 9, 2016 In IR looking toward office and shed. IR950 used here, a very strong filter. So I had to pump up the ISO to 1600...a bit of banding and not a good pic really. Welcome, dear visitor! platypus Posted November 10, 2016 Share #11 Posted November 10, 2016 Dave, it doesn't really matter how big, or small, your garden is as long as it's a way to relax and is fun and a bit of an adventure....oh, and a form of self expression too! I can see that your garden is all these things and a source of pride as well....so, all in all, it's a very successful garden! Thank you for posting photos of it. I am so jealous of your enormous lavender bush. As I'm sure you know lavender is supposed to be un-killable, it's even grown commercially here on the Monaro as it revels in the tough climate.... even so I managed to kill off my three poor little potted specimens last winter. Don't know how....some sympathetic people suggest too much watering. This lavender debacle was merely the last of a long line of failures, as a result I've thrown in the towel. david strachan Posted November 10, 2016 Author Share #12 Posted November 10, 2016 Thanks Dee. Pretty crappy pics but there you are. Lavender planting, any planting, in your winter would be tricky. Always spring or Autumn for planting in southern Australia. Overwatering definitely kills things as wilts and rot can affect the roots so easily. When I plant out I put water in the hole before I put the plant in, and backfill. Then a quick water. I may not water the next day...depending. I usually get 100% planting success, but had a basil seedling just turn up it's toes...fusarium wilt I'd say. Contagion from the nursery. A spray with Seasol is a great way to give your garden a bit of "tonic". Keep going you are a lover of the natural world and plants will add so much. all best.. david strachan Posted November 10, 2016 Author Share #13 Posted November 10, 2016 Ooops, sorry about the lecture Dee. I went off thinking I might change my post, but I must have posted! More to the point... You and sister have a thousand acres of garden out there...all natural and beautiful. Your pictures show you may not need any more. all best.. platypus Posted November 11, 2016 Share #14 Posted November 11, 2016 Ooops, sorry about the lecture Dee. I went off thinking I might change my post, but I must have posted! More to the point... You and sister have a thousand acres of garden out there...all natural and beautiful. Your pictures show you may not need any more. all best.. Hi Dave....your "lecture" is full of good tips and they, and your kind interest, are much appreciated, thank you! After a lifetime of failure I know I don't have a good effect on most plants, though I do grow succulents (in pots) in the house. The poor old succulents can't be put outside as my resident possums relish them, a bit unfair really as they (the possums) are fully fed on fruit, biscuits and bread. After posting yesterday I thought of the same point that you make above, we do indeed have (actually about 5,000) acres of 'garden" around us here and no-one appreciates it more than I do...so thank you too for reminding me to keep my priorities straight! My best regards to you....
