Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted October 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted October 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I had my S006, I bought a new split prism screen and liked it. When I traded in my 006 for a 007 I got the shop to swap out the screens so that I keep my split prism.............now that I have been shooting in low light with my 007 I have now changed back to a clear screen as I find it easier to focus with............what do most of you 007 shooters use for a screen? albertknappmd Posted October 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted October 4, 2016 I use split prism all the time. More accurate and yes a little harder in low light situations but so it goes... Albert

jpk Posted October 4, 2016 Share #4 Posted October 4, 2016 Split screen is less accurate than AF according to leica. I see in many cases after AF confirm a tiny little off focus in the split screen, but if I compensate manually I end up with soft images. I asked Leica for adjustment, but they said they can't adjust more accurate than it already is. So the split screen is nice but does mislead in critical cases especially wide open in the not so close range...

When I was using the SP I thought it was the dogs..............Then I did a shoot in a dimly lit hotel room and really struggled to get focus so decided to use the SP and when I got home many of the shots were soft. I talked to my buddy that sold me the SP and he said that I should go back to the clear screen, I did that at no cost and its like chalk and cheese......the SP is a farce if you ask me. I hate the split image circle, which to me often impedes manual focusing. I'd rather it be all microprism. With LiveView on the S007 the screen is less needed. Jeff S Posted October 4, 2016 Share #7 Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Using the 006 in less than good light, if the lens is additionally slow (e.g., the long end of the zoom), half the split prism screen goes black. Not good. This would probably be less of an issue on the 007, but if I were to consider the 007 (possibly if AF motor issues are fixed and the camera price plummets like the 006), I'd test the camera with the clear screen first, with the hope that it would suffice. hoppyman Posted October 4, 2016 Share #8 Posted October 4, 2016 (edited) These comments really surprise me because my personal experience was quite different. I has this screen fitted to my S2 for several thousand exposures and found it very good. There would be a number of variables in how we use our cameras of course. Because I started with SLRs in the 70's this configuration was very familiar and then some years with M cameras. For me the precision of aligning the split image with this and M is the best I have ever had. However that does not exclude any adjustment error I am sure and if the screen seating is not perfect that could be a serious issue. I don't feel confident that the matte screen is precise enough for me but again so much depends on what and how you are shooting. In a quite dark room I have missed with AF on a number of occasions. I do like that the usable focuspoint is a line not a dot (if that makes sense) for focus/recompose. I would like the vertical reticle still present however, since most of the time I am using the AF anyway and that makes centring the spot area easier. I must admit that I haven't got around to fitting it in my S (Typ 007) as yet because the AF the way I use it has just be fine and basically don't want to fiddle!
