Very impressive for a camera, where video is a secondary function. Thanks for posting. Made me want to go straight to my booze cupboard and pour myself a Bombay and Tonic. Would you know it; there's no gin there except Hendricks.

I am just about to purchase the SL with the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm lens.

I plan to use the camera primarily for shooting movies and was wondering about

how the autofocus works when shooting video. Coming from a Cinematography background I used only manual PL lenses and have never shot (video) with an autofocus lens before. Is the autofocus constant as you're shooting even if the camera and/or subject is moving for the duration of the shot? Or do you have to keep tapping the function button to activate it while shooting? Or is it better to turn the autofocus off altogether and use a manual follow focus attached to the lens?

The problem I found with AF and video if you are not using a separate audio recording system, is that you pick up the AF motor noise. The way it works depends on how you have set AF. I had it as continuous and AF worked without any additional action on my part.

I'm using a TL lens (with 2014 firmware -- I don't know if there is newer lens firmware available), so if you have a store handy, you may want to try these experiments yourself with an SL lens.

Contrast-detect autofocus always tries several positions before zeroing in on the best one.  So it is fine to use AF-S at the start of a clip, relying on depth of field for the remainder of the shot, but refocusing with a half-press during a shot will cause a momentary blurring. Continuous AF works smoothly and slowly in good light, but can get lost in dark patches or areas with low contrast.  So the last possibility (manual focus) is the most reliable.  Focus peaking and magnification are available and work during the shot.  When you half-press the shutter the focus distances (plus near and far depth of focus) are shown on the top LCD.

Danny,

I am recently pensioned off after 45 years of Cinematography (film and video).  Save yourself a lot of stress and rage.....Just use manual focus and exposure like every other film/vid worker bee.  Stills...You can get away with auto-focus....Not film/vid.

Your going to love the SL  electronic view finder.  I wish I had that finder when I was working.

Ciao,  Sully
