A good reason why you shouldn't buy a M8 ... and should dump the DMR

Don't buy any of those round-stone stone axes.

I hear that Ogg is working on one made of flint with a chip-sharpened edge.

p.s.

Cameras are disposable things to the working user and have long term value only to the collector.

Usually they are are different people, sometimes they are the same.

Competition in all things will drive the competitor to use the mose efficient tool for the job.

Erwin is a compulsive writer. With some imagination - and way too many, often tortured, words.

But I do not consider him " a reliable source".

As to not buying today's product because the company is working on tommorow's? It is actually the other way around.

Come on folks, life is way too short to worry about such considerations.

Oscar Wilde had it right: "A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing." Worrying about your M8 or DMR becoming obsolete or losing resale because of products that may not see daylight for years is truly bizarre. The current products can be used and enjoyed now, unlike an M9 or R10.

When I got the Ricoh GR-D last year I thought, this is the type of camera that Leica would have produced if they were still an innovative company, which they have not been for ages.

I have to say that as a 30 year pro photographer with nearly 10 years of digital imaging, the M8 is all the innovation I need. Is it a perfect camera? Of course not. No camera is or ever will be. But for my shooting needs, the M8 has excellent IQ, the file size is perfect and I love the simplicity of the camera which is what brought me into the M system in the first place many years ago. I have no desire to use a 16 MP camera which will fill my hard drives faster, slow down my processing considerably and require massive SD cards. I've had double truck M8 reproduction in a couple of magazines and had editors who are normally tight-lipped say very complimentary things about the images. That's good enough for me.

I'd probably feel differently about this if I did landscape or art photography where I came back from a day in the field with just a few dozen images. In that case, I'd want the larger files. But for those of us who do the photojournalist routine and come in from a shoot with 200-300 images, 10 MP is just fine.

If my understanding of sensor size to MP count is right then as the MP count gets higher on the smae size sensor the COC gets smaller and that the lens resolution can't keep up with the MP count. Making it hard to shoot hand held at lower shutter speed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think you're right, in general: I hope Leica pepole is well aware of this concern and before adopting a 16 MP sensor (Kodak again ?) shall evaluate the risk to have RAWs that result WORST than M8's... we will see... one more reason not to stay away from the fine M8 waiting for "something-maybe-to-come-one-day"...

I would be happy if they would just get the M8 to parity in areas where most other manufacturers have them beat (auto WB, battery issues, charger size, baseplate, quieter shutter, etc.) and enhance the firmware in obvious (and easily implemented) ways like being able to manually designate lens coding. Also, upgrade to an industry average method for electronically handling and tracking repairs and communicating order status with customers. Until they get some of these basics up to standard, I would prefer they not waste time trying to get live LCDs and electronic rangefinders to work.
