RDK Posted August 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, Im new to Leica and have a M240 question- Ive just noticed that once I turn on my camera approx 3 seconds later I hear the shutter opening?/closing? Is this normal- Ive actually taken a couple of shots right after turing on the camera and have missed the capture becasue of this delay? Any help would be appreciated Thank you Dean

pedaes Posted August 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted August 1, 2016 Hi and welcome. Sounds like you have Live View switched on. See if you get same reaction with it switched off. If you are not using LV it is best left off for several reasons (the delay you raise, battery drain, exposing sensor to dust etc)
Peter Kilmister Posted August 1, 2016 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2016 Dean, welcome to the forum. The M240 is a seriously good camera and, if you are new to Leica, will take a short while for you to get used to it. Read the manual. In fact, make it bedtime reading. Everything is very logical. Once you grasp the concept the controls become intuitive. Please remember that most people on here are very friendly. You might get the odd snarl but ignore that and ask as many questions as you want. Good luck and enjoy the results of changing your camera. jaapv Posted August 1, 2016 Share #4 Posted August 1, 2016 You have set the exposure measuring to "advanced". Get back to "classic" and switch off live view.
ECohen Posted August 2, 2016 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2016 Welcome and enjoy this wonderful camera. Along with the Leica manual, Check out Thorsten Overgaard "Suggested Basic Menu Settings" (attached link) Its a great place to start. http://www.overgaard.dk/Leica-M-Type-240-aka-Leica-M10-digital-rangefinder-camera-page-39-The-Menu-Settings-of-the-Leica-M240.html

RDK Posted August 2, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted August 2, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you for the replies everyone... I did not have LV switched on (I have tried LV but the focus peaking was really none existent so I wont be using it much, if at all) I did change metering to advanced- so thank you jaapv for that advice - I have changed it back and all is good. I am curious though -what is actually happening with advanced metering turned on? why the delay? what is the clic? I was shooting with a fuji X100T and now I really love shooting with the M240-its a joy and I cant wait to use it each day. I have read the manual front to back- but im sure I will learn some cool user tricks from this forum-links appreciated. Thank you all again, Talk soon- Dean. Vec Posted August 3, 2016 Share #8 Posted August 3, 2016 The standard metering is reading off of the reflected light from the painted shutter blades that you see when you take off the lens. This is simply a center-weighted metering. The advanced metering uses the sensor -- so essentially you're in live view without the display on as far as the camera is concerned. After it meters with the sensor information it needs to close and re-cock the shutter, then actually take the picture normally, then re-open the shutter for the metering for the next shot. All the shutter sounds are this dance playing out when you take a picture. When you turn the camera on the shutter opens to turn on the advanced metering in this mode as well. Start by reading the FAQ thread at the top of the forum. It covers all digital M models, so there is some stuff you can skip.
