Estate collection of Leica cameras and lenses

Hi. New, and probably just a quick visitor here. I inherited some Leica film equipment from my father and plan to sell it. At first I thought I'd put each item on eBay, but then that seemed too time consuming, so I think I'll try to sell it as a whole lot. It includes:

5 Leica cameras

10 to 12 various lenses, 2 of them are screw mount

Miscellaneous accessories (Visoflex, a few meters, caps, etc.)

Here's the cameras and lenses:

001_350x233.jpg

All of the rest of the stuff, and close-ups of the items can be found here, a few pages I got ready for ebay.

Questions:

1. Is there something I should add to the descriptions, or errors I should correct?

2. Is eBay the best way to get rid of this stuff?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Sincerest condolences on the loss of your father ... presumably there was a probate valuation and probate has been granted ?? Most sellers would also list serial numbers and seller references. Good luck with Ebay .

Thanks. I can list the serial numbers. They do show on all the close-ups, though.

I don't remember the probate value, but the estate was settled several years ago and the items are just laying around collecting dust at this point.

Have you tried using any of these cameras? The M6, in particular, is a good modern camera and should be eminently useable - although it will almost certainly need a new battery, and possibly a CLA.

I know that my Dad loved them, but I've been so spoiled by digital SLR that I can't imagine spending the time and effort now to re-learn range finder film techniques for the little bit of photography that I do. I'm sure they're better in someone else's hands. :)

You'll make more money if you sell them individually. To be blunt, the only person who would but a set like this would be someone who would want to split the collection and sell the individual items at a profit. You may as well do this yourself.

Do you have any references as a seller ... anywhere ? ... Quite honestly, few people here including me are going to take you seriously as you ar attempting to sell items having never posted anything on the forums before ... All the equipment is valuable but few people would consider parting with $$££ without some positive feedback to prove that the sale(s) are without risk ... Especially when you introduce yourself as a "quick visitor"

No, I don't have any references here, and I certainly understand why one would be suspicious, especially on a first post. I'm not a Leica enthusiast, and in that respect don't even belong here, but I don't know where else to go for advice on selling this stuff. Again, that's why I figured I'd just put it up on eBay if that' s the best option, which I think it is. I do have eBay feedback ("dbahnvt", 100% positive over about a 7 year period) but that doesn't really help anybody on this forum.

I do appreciate the advice so far, and several people have contacted me privately about individual items, so I am re-thinking whether I should sell the whole lot or perhaps sell most of the items individually.

Nice collection!

You could also take it to a Leica dealer who will sell it for you on a commission basis, or see what they would offer you for the lot on straightforward sale - but it will probably be the least that you could hope to get.

Given that you have e bay feedback, if you list each item separately (I would also list camera bodies without lenses) you will almost certainly sell it all, and within a week/10 day auction period. The drawback is that you will no doubt get 100's of e mails from people with various questions and also the hassle of having to deal with payments/postage.

There is going to be a for sale section on this site soon, so you could also hang on a little while until that's up and running.

The camera above is a Leica lllg (the last of the screw mount cameras). The rear photo is wrong though, you've posted the photo of the back of an M.

The other thing if selling on the internet, you need to be very accurate with descriptions of condition - are you sure all of these are in working order, are the rangefinders clear/accurate, are the lenses free of mould or fungus etc etc.

Its worth reading up on dealer descriptions, ratings like Good/VGood, EXC EXC+/++ Mint- Mint etc.

One specific question I do have, though.

How would I describe this camera, i.e. model number?

mc_200x133.jpg

(Front and rear thumbnails are on this page)

It is a Leica IIIg ... they sell for a higher price normally compared to say a IIIf ... Ebay should give some typical auction prices as they sell fairly regularly ... dealer's IIIg stocks tend to 'stick' unless discounted

OOps! Thanks, I'll fix that.

if it is what I think it is

the item in this photograph

Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here…

Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!

on the right looks like it may be a 16462 Viso Leica adapter aka ZOOEP & if so I would like to buy this from you

the adapter is used only with two lenses, the 90 cron and the 135 f2.8

I would have a better idea if you could put up a photograph with it flipped over so I can see the screw mount side

measuring the dimensions of the inner thread would be a help as well

maybe one of the mavens here confirm this?

A fine collection, surely a good value: I also think it's better to sell pieces one by one, at least bodies, lenses, and Visoflex : is a Viso III, now on the rise in price for it is rediscovered as an interesting add-on for M8: just to envision a single price, I have the impression that a VisoIII with prism, box, AND bellows plus some adapter/focusing ring (as yours) surely can worth not less than 500 US$.

$500 ???!!!! ... It would probably stick for many weeks at that price in most dealers.

James,

are you referring to the thumbnail photos? If yes, then the rear photo shown next to the front photo of the IIIg is indeed a rear view of the IIIg. Don't let yourself be fooled by the film indicator on the back, the IIIg was the only LTM (well, apart from the Ig) to have this, and it looks just the same as on an, say, M2 or M3.

Cheers,

Andy

I'm not too sure about this situation. When I first read your origianal post it was interesting. You sounded like someone who inocently was trying to figure out what to do with all of your fathers Leica camera equipment. You sounded like you don't know much about selling on line and that you did not know about the value of the equipment. Later posts revealed you have been selling on e-bay for 7 years. Now you come here to the Leica forum. Why did you just let these items sit around for years gathering dust as you put it? When you have been busy selling other items on e-bay for all of these past 7 years.

Something is not right here.

Agreed ... something not quite right here
