leicamann Posted August 6, 2006 Share #21 Posted August 6, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is really unfortunate and really sad. Bob was a great guy, always very light hearted about posting images. His presence will be sorely missed. Our condolances to the family. Advertisement Posted August 6, 2006 Posted August 6, 2006 Hi leicamann, Take a look here Bob Smithies of this forum has died :-((((. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
asmith Posted August 6, 2006 Share #22 Posted August 6, 2006 Bob was my neighbour and friend as well as my mentor in my reluctant progress towards digital competence. He introduced me to the Forum and helped me to register and to post. He was witty and irreverent but always generous and helpful. Just a week or so ago he was showing me the album of photographs taken on a recent trip on a barge down the canal du midi and admiring my recent acquisition of a IIIF to add to my collection. I shall miss him and his good company. Alwyn Smith
wda Posted August 6, 2006 Share #23 Posted August 6, 2006 Steve, thank you. I could easily have missed Bob's passing. He will be sadly missed, not least among the Leica fraternity. David

stunsworth Posted August 9, 2006 Author Share #26 Posted August 9, 2006 Today's Guardian has some appreciations of Bob by his former collegues. If anything the stories make him an even more likeable person than before. Guardian Unlimited | Obituaries | Bob Smithies I never met Bob, the more I read about him the more I regret that. wbesz Posted August 9, 2006 Share #27 Posted August 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) It's always sad when someone passes on, most of all for the family. Best thing is to leave without any regrets, each day you wake up should be looked upon as a good day, and you should make the most of it.

elansprint72 Posted August 10, 2006 Share #30 Posted August 10, 2006 I met Bob only once, in the early 70's; he had come along to speak at our camera club (I don't think that he often did this but I had been on at our President for ages to invite him). I found Bob's photography in The (Manchester) Guardian inspirational and made some attempt to emulate his style, with grainy images of the more desperate quarters of Salford. I was absolutely delighted when he picked out a couple of my humble efforts that night and praised them. Last year Bob and I became "internet friends" when he joined the old forum; we have since enjoyed a regular exchange of e-mails and when I posted a copy of one of those old shots he said "I've seen this before", I then had to explain myself. Quite few few of Bob's e-mails were asking me how to fix some techno-thing that he had buggered up with the forum, I think he distruted computers even more than I do; about three weeks ago he had managed to delete all his web site details and was desperately asking how to get back into this forum! Bob came across as a most kind and warm-hearted individual, a very talented yet modest man, this news has come as a terrible shock and I really will miss him. Pete.
