It definitively worth it if your have ROM lenses from the compatibility list, and even more so if you have a ROM Vario. All my ROM Leica R lenses are working well and are showing automatically the focal length used in review mode and the name of the lens and the focal length used in the exif. The camera knows the minimum and maximum aperture of each lens, which improves the correctness of the estimation of the aperture by the SL. With some surprises. My 80/1,4 is a 81mm, 180/2,8 = 178mm, 280/2,8 = 276mm, Vario 21-35 = 21-34mm, Vario 28-90 = 29-90mm and Vario 35-70 = 35-67mm. Only my 19, 50 and 90 are showing the same focal length. The ROM Vario 21-35, 28-90 and 35-70 are all showing the intermediate focal lengths. They are all working like the SL 24-90 without the AF. The SF 64 flash head zooms like it should (tried during the Photokina), the same it works with the SL 24-90. The Vario-Apo-Elmarit 70-180/2,8, as expected, is only showing 70mm, which is better than 0mm. The R Apo-Extender 2X ROM doesn't transmit the resulting focal length or the resulting aperture, is showing 0mm in review mode and block access to the list of R lenses in camera. The R Macro-Adapter ROM doesn't transmit the focal length, is showing 0mm in review mode and block access to the list of R lenses in camera. It is strange because they were working correctly with the R9. The only way to access the list with those two accessories is it to use them with a non-ROM adapter, like the stacked R-Adapter M and M-Adapter L or the Novoflex R-Adapter L. I hope that an updated firmware will solve this problem. Because it cannot be ROMed, the Apo-Extender 1,4X used together with the R-Adapter L give access to the R lenses list in camera. But remember that the Apo-Extender 1,4X can only be mounted on a ROM lens by activating manually the aperture cam and only then can the combo be mounted on the SL (which is not equipped with the R9 internal lever to move the aperture cam in the correct position) All the non-ROM R lenses used together with the R-Adapter L give access to the R lenses list in the SL menu. Now about the removable tripod mount. If you want to use it to put the camera + lens combo closer to the center of gravity, you will need to add a long lens plate backward. The SL somewhat interests me but with a 2.8-4.0/28-90 Vario-Elmarit-R, 2.0/50 Summicron-R and 4.0/80-200 Varoio-Elmar-R, plenty of M lenses, and no interest in AF I'm not in a rush for either of the SL's native lenses. Leica has to see it selling more SLs rather than conclude that it impedes the sales of Vario-Elmarit-SLs. I had the SL 24-90 on loan for a month and used it like I use (again) the R 28-90 since I received my SL in December. I didn't make any direct comparisons. At the end of the loan, I had the opportunity to buy the SL for a good price. I passed because of its size and the size of the lens hood. On the other hand, I intend to sell the R 70-180/2,8 and 280/2,8 and buy a SL 90-280. Even if I much prefer the ergonomic of these R lenses, the IS and AF of the 90-280 makes up for the difference. Lately it mostly has been not available at B&H, Adorama, Leica Store Miami, etc. I understand that it is often Leica's strategy to not want to flood the market but this is a bit too ridiculous for words IMHO... It's balanced with the longer lenses installed, especially the 180/2.8 (see picture), but can topple over backwards while you change lenses... I think I will end up leaving the bracket off. The 280 has a tripod mount on the lens barrel. Leicaiste points out that when an accessory such as the APO 2X extender is used with the new smart R-adapter, neither the identity of the extender nor the new focal length of the extended lens comes through. He concluded that access to the list of R lenses and their profiles was blocked. I found something even stranger. I used the extender with a 180 R lens and the EXIF showed 15mm focal length, which was the last ID I had set while using the stacked adapters. With the new adapter, the focal length in current use in R zoom lenses is reported, showing up in the review panels and in the Exif. And a pleasant surprise, firmware 2.x calculates a distortion correction as a function of that focal length, at least for some of the zooms! I see this in the 21-35, but not in the 35-70 f/4 (which was not a Leica design).
