Based on what other vendors have launched/are rumoured to launch, Leica has to increase the pixel count in both M, S and SL. Or, alternatively, present two versions of a system; one stripped version with a modest MP count and another more expensive/technically advanced version.

Whether Leica choses to use Photokina or - as has been the case for the last releases - prefer to run their own show, remains to be seen.

Personally, I am very curious about the next M - whenever it will materialise.

I'm not so sure - I think the pixel count for a reportage  camera is about maxed out @ 24  Too many technical difficulties for handheld photography at high resolution - and  the M is not a tripod/flash camera. Leica might be of the same opinion - and they have never taken competition much into account with the M -  no real  competitors. They might increase  the MP for the SL, maybe.

I am very curious too,   I shall sell all my M gear (and maybe all Leica gear) or upgrade  , depending on the next M  , I shall not go on with optical RF

Erick, I think you have expressed your preference for EVFs previously. I am sympathetic to your views. Although I like the Leica rangefinder system, probably due to familiarity with it over 40+ years I am very impressed by the advantages of modern EVFs which not only give a very clear image  but have many advantages such as magnification, adjustment of brightness not to mention image stabilisation if the sensor has IS. The ideal would be to have both optical and electronic viewfinders but it would be difficult to fit it all in without a comprehensive redesign of the M.

I hope Leica has a nice surprise for us when the next M is revealed.

Actually I am a bit surprised that you did not do so on introduction of the SL.

I shall certainly do it if nothing comes , and the next SL 50 Summilux is very attractive

but now  there is a new actor with Hasselblad X1D, a  MF system  with 3 lenses  cheaper than the SL with 2 lenses

About year ago i did concrete and precise preditction -  "New M. This year. This Fall".

Fall = Photokina ,   I'll be there

You know maybe something precisely ? :-)

Yes- but it depends on your style of photography whether Medium Format makes sense - and the lens system is very limited. At least the SL covers a wide range of focal lengths and has the option to take a large number of M and R and other legacy lenses.

I had an Hasselblad H + 3 lenses before, the main problem was the portability

I dont like  the 2 SL zooms , for me actually the SL has only a 50 Summilux

and I love my M lenses :-)   small and f/1.4

It's pixels at Photokina or bust, for me. M or S, I don't mind.

Leica can pretend, or believe, all they like, that pixels don't matter but if they can't get with the program and offer something that photographers in the modern world ***need*** (ymmv) then I will have to adopt one of the many other excellent options on offer, from a brand that understands, and is a better future investment. I will be changing my style a little, but so be it, it is becoming too costly to hold onto now and waiting for something that may or may not occur some years down the track is something I have lost patience with.

The problem is not that it does not matter. The problem is that in many cases too high a pixel count will negatively impact handheld photography. For my use a 50 MP M camera would be a nono to replace my M240.

Should Leica decide to bring out a 50 MP M to keep up with the Joneses they must have a camera in the 20 MP class as well to maintain quality with the intended use of this type of camera

it could be a M with 36mp and body stabilization + Electronic RF

I agree with Paul J , at least the S should come with 50 mp , and mirrorless + all what comes with a today camera

There are PLENTY of cameras out there for those who prefer an electronic finder. there's only one for those who like/prefer using optical rangefinders. The M system is, what it is. That's why I like and use it instead of the electronic finder-equipped cameras I was using before.

No there are not plenty of cameras with so many good and  small and  1.4 lenses , there is only one, and I  want to use these lenses on a M with EVF or ERF

The M system is, what it is

then why don't you shoot only films then ?
