Douglas Herr is my personal hero and foundation for everything Leica R.

 

He so much symbolizes the core Leica R user that he would be the first person to ask what he thought of the Leica SL system.

 

When I realized Leica Camera AG didn’t send him a Leica SL to test, I decided to send him my own Leica SL for some months.

 

When the camera returned after four months, I was eager to learn what his take was on it. I asked if he would care to write an article, and here it is.

Thanks Thorsten for allowing me extensive 'play time' with your SL, and for your legibility edits to my review    For the moment I've chosen to continue using the Sony a7II but I'll certainly be keeping track of Leica's development of the SL and its system.  I feel that the SL is an outstanding camera for the 21st century.

Regarding the corner issues with a long tele and stacked adapters: The Novoflex adapters linking Canon FD to Leica SL or Leica R lenses to SL work fine (doesn't have the reduced opening of the M adapter), so the new R Adapter SL should work equally well.

 

Since SL provides lens stabilisation for the native SL lenses (except for the announced 50Lux), it is hard to imagine a SL-body with sensor stabilisation. If so, this must be a body version II or III of the system.

 

A more likely question is whether and/or when Leica will offer a stabilised tele, let's say around 400 mm.

 

​Any views/comments whether a longish SL-lens can be expected? The R-280 APO f4 is brilliant, of course, but it was only made in about 2000 copies and it certainly is a manual focus lens. Yes, we have the new 90-280, but without extenders 280mm will not make it for many wildlife photographers.

 

I, for sure, looks forward to a longish, stabilised SL-lens. The price tag for such a lens is an entirely different thing, though...

Having no inside information, my speculation is that it's only a matter of time.  One possibility I can envision is new L-mount focussing modules for the modular APO-Telyt lens heads.

 

As you mention the price tag is another thing and my imagination suggests that for practical purposes this would make such a lens unavailable to me.
