Neil, I enjoy looking at your photos and you'd be daft to try and cover all the styles and subjects you like with just one camera and a couple of lenses. What you do works for you so no need to change. But we're all different, obviously. I'm not suggesting what might work for me should work for you.

That's great for you, and it's good that there's such a versatile camera as the SL to give you what you want.

I want something very different, and it's exactly that "wide range of lenses, a different one for every occasion" approach that I'm trying to get away from. It's a personal choice.

got it mate..... got it

I can understand that. If some God-like creature were to issue me with a restraining order, restricting me to 1 camera / 1 lens for the rest of my mortal coil phase, I would choose my SWC, and would not feel any great pain. I like simplicity.

Same here. The only thing about this that gets in my way is that I'd prefer a digital capture system nowadays. Until there's a full 56x56mm sensor back for the SWC, I have to make do with other stuff.

Let me think...I did mention that I own the 28/1.4. Seriously, I like the 50mm focal length and only have three 50s. My favorite one on the SL is the Summilux-SL. I love how the SL operates and I love this lens, more than the Noctilux and the 50 Apo Cron on it. And, yes, it’s way bigger than the Noctilux, but it’s a pure joy to use in the cold and wet winters where I live.

After reading the last 2 or 3 pages:

If you have too many cameras and would like to restrict yourself to only one - simply do it.

It does not matter if you sell the rest or not. It is just again showing that you care a lot for the money and that you cannot let it go.

Simply give the equipment away - or lend it to a local photography club (at a school for example). Even better if this club is for newcomers and young people. This could mean a new possibility for children from poor families - and do not tell me there are no poor people where you live.

If there is no photo club of this sort, start one.

Get your own children involved if they are at the right age - or grandchildren, and other relatives.

Do you really need a new X1D to start doing it ? And the most expensive lenses ?

I'd hate to have to choose. M-A and 50 Summilux?

I've read more than the last two to three pages of this thread as I was contemplating getting the X1D instead of the next SL lens. I cannot help thinking that someone is on a mission here.

Which I have done, and continue to do from time to time. I spent several years using 1 camera / 1 lens, then went commando for many more years with 0 cameras / 0 lenses.

Nowadays, although the remission appears to have ended, I generally pass my excess to my children, and make that their burden. No point in it sitting unused.

I'm currently back at a Kingdom of cameras and lenses, and see nothing wrong with that. If it weren't there, it wouldn't be the end of the World, though.

c'mon guys ...... how many times have we posted here complaining about 'comparisons' between cameras where all the images are different, taken at different times, with different lighting, different ISO and different apertures ?

And using the raw converter with the worst color profile for skin tones on the SL image, C1. C1 produces tomato like skin tones.

Hold off. I considered letting go of several M lenses to get the X1D but decided not. Keeping all. Will wait to see just how much I like it first. I doubt will part with my M246......but time will tell. If I had just the M240, that I could part with.

I needed autofocus and i needed to buy before January as I am leaving the country for a few months. So, I decided not to wait for the X1D and just purchased the SL and 24-90 zoom... the 1st zoom lens that I have ever owned.  I had worked a deal for the trade in of my M240 and 4No M lenses, but in the end decided that I will keep both cameras and all lenses until such time as I, in order of preference/probability;

a) decide whether to get the X1D and 1No prime...in addition to the SL

B) get a 2nd SL body and look at a prime on that and possibly also use one or two M lenses on that

c) look at the new M10 so I can carry on using my M lenses on that... but I think I would only go down this road if it is a higher resolution sensor with as good an EVF as the SL.

Apologies for the (another) Cat picture... my sisters cat and the 1st photo taken with the camera and I am really ever so pleased with the camera and zoom lens combination and ease of use and the results.

Thank you. That is good news.

  • Selectable AF point

  • Auto White Balance

  • Exposure simulation on LCD/EVF

  • B and T-modes

  • Lens rmware can be updated through the camera

  • Improved stability when the battery is low

  • Language updates

  • Bug Fixes

I presume B = Bulb mode, the existing modes are:

Mq Manual Quick Mode.

M Manual Mode.

A Aperture Priority Mode.

S Shutter Priority Mode.

P Program Mode.

Not sure what T mode is unless it is Time, but that is covered with Bulb mode surely.

T is presumably a fixed amount of time that you pre-determine, set in the camera and start by pressing the shutter button (or screen or app), whereas B is like a traditional bulb where you open the shutter and hold it open until you release it whenever you choose to during the exposure.

But I could be wrong. Some cameras implement T mode differently, and are more to do with how you use remote shutter releases.

I don't know what "Manual quick" mode is, do you?

I don't know what "Manual quick" mode is, do you?

Not really Peter but I did download the latest version of the manual - X1D_User-Guide_161214_02.pdf ! (ha-ha!)

MANUAL QUICK EXPOSURE MODE

Mq mode is a Manual mode for quick photography. This mode works best when the X1D Camera is used on a xed Tripod.

  1. 1  First set the Focus and Image Composition in another Program mode like Manual mode (M) for example. Mq mode does not support Live View.

  2. 2  Use the X1D Camera on a xed stable Tripod.

  3. 3  Select Mq mode on the Mode Dial.

MQ MODE FEATURES

- Mq mode saves Power because the Live View is Off.

- Mq mode is faster because the Shutter is already closed and

ready for exposure.

- Mq mode is more silent due to the fact that the Camera uses

less Shutter movements.

Note!

The White Balance mode “Auto”, AWB, requires Live View to be active for at least 1 second before it is used. To use AWB in Mq mode (without Live View option), start Live View for 1 second in (for example) M-mode before changing to Mq mode.

LuLa wrote that the X1D has now 30 AFpoints (focus points). Different from what Ming Thein used.

But this seems to be a typo. (The picture shows actually 35.)

I also try to download the newest manual (version 1.1), to find out what they write there.

OK. I have it and there is a chapter about moving the AFpoint. They state on page 65 that there are 35 AFpoints to choose from - which is probably what we have to expect. (with fw 1.14 ??). That's great (better than the single one there was in the first edition of the manual), and probably enough for face detection.

On page 60 they state that an external monitor (connected by HDMI) can be used for liveview. I really like that. I always wondered why this does not work for the SL as well. (easier than tethering or WiFi connection, when used in the studio)

But how easy is it to move the AF point?

Simply read the manual.    :)   How difficult can it be to touch the screen or to press a button or two ? (Just the same buttons as for the menus) Not as easy as with a joystick, but manageable.

Yes, all comes nicely together - just a few days late (about 200 ;-). And the software on all the demos was far from what you get now !!  Looks like the software was "finished" just a few days ago. Really convincing demos ! And most of the demo systems are not even able to run this software ! So probably not a single user has seen the real camera before he got his item.

What if Leica or anybody else had done it that way ? Did I hear the word "cheating" ?

So the camera was "only delayed because of restructuring" caused by too many orders ? Yes, probably, but rather restructuring of the software ...    :D:rolleyes::p

But the good news is that with further progress, the camera will probably get more features (like the 63 AFpoints that Ming Thein mentioned). And face recognition for AF.

If only firmware is the problem then a lot can be fixed over time.

So the question remains: Better be an early adopter or wait until the main features are working as promised ? Sounds somehow familiar - do I upgrade this OS now ? Or wait until the main bugs are detected and fixed ?
