Advertisement Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Hi Peter H, Take a look here Is Leica really behind Sony in sensor technology?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
tom0511 Posted July 4, 2016 Share #62 Posted July 4, 2016 Hi folks, Do you think Leica is behind Sony in sensor technology? I will really appreciate your thoughts on this matter. All I know is that I prefer the color I get out of my Leica cameras over that I got out of the Sony A7II. How much is sensor, how much lens? I dont know. Olsen Posted July 4, 2016 Share #63 Posted July 4, 2016 Now THAT is surprising, given that quite a few Leica models run on Sony sensors... I am sure that you are familiar with the discussion on 'state subsidized Japanese camera sensors'. Even if Leica is using Sony sensors in some models does not say that they automatically have availability to 'all' Japanese sensors. What Leica models have Sony sensors? Not any full fram, I would take it.
jaapv Posted July 4, 2016 Share #64 Posted July 4, 2016 No - Sony was in the market to supply a sensor for the M240, but was not able to provide one that would meet the specifications, so Leica created their own through CMOSIS. Nowadays the sensor procurement is aided by the narrow connection with Panasonic, resulting in a German/Japanese/Israeli conglomerate.
mmx_2 Posted July 5, 2016 Share #65 Posted July 5, 2016 I for one actually appreciate that Leica isn't using Sony sensors in their M:s, SL and S cameras. Nothing wrong with Sony, they are definitely top in the market but nothing wrong with good old competition. By choosing another partner with "best of the best" in mind we (the photographers) now have access to at least two (three?) top-of-the-line sensor suppliers. If all camera manufacturers where to choose the same sensor supplier we would quite soon end up with higher prices and less quality for the same money. For me choosing a sensor is a little bit like choosing film in the old days, some people couldn't stand Kodak others hated Agfa and some loved Fuji, in the end there were amazing photographs taken on all of them. hmathias Posted July 5, 2016 Share #66 Posted July 5, 2016 I'm not familiar with Fab in any connection other than Thunderbirds. So, is Sony a Fab House? My understanding is that Leica's current sensor fab is a Belgium company. Other members will know if this is so, for sure. The new Sony dual output HDR sensor that was mentioned earlier, is actually an ARRI design that is used already in that German company's ALEXA professional cinematography camera. In the cinematography and video camera businesses, SONY has a long history of coopting everyone else's technology and producing it themselves with slight changes to avoid patent suits. I will leave you to draw your own conclusions about Sony's still cameras. Most of Sony's businesses (except Playstation) have been losing money for years and one by one Sony is fading from that business sector, this is certainly true in cinematography.
