Sell my 30,70mm S lenses for a 30-90 zoom good idea?

Went through the same dilemma. This S Typ 007 and vario 30-90 combo is near to perfect for travel or reportage where you can't really change lenses in the field. It is rather heavy but also gives you a lot of heft, which is easy to work with. If one wants the vario, the S 007 should be the camera of choice given its low light abilities. For anything else than good lighting conditions, one would run into limitations with the S 006 / SE. That said, the 70mm lens cannot be beaten optically by the vario. So I would keep that one handy as well, as a low light backup.

Pascal,

In regards to your analysis of S 006 vs S 007, at base ISO how much more DR does the S 007 offer over the S 006?

I wish there was a Leica dealer in my area where I could do my own analysis.

Since I was the OP I think I am going to stick with my primes and keep looking for a used 45 which seem to be extremely rare to find used.

Kuau,

As a user of both 006 and 007, I don't feel that much difference in the DR comparing the files. It's more about the 'cleanness' of the files... I feel the 007 files is slightly cleaner and more 'plastic' in terms of rendering.

Definitely cleaner but I do feel an extra stop is noticeable .

Hello S Users. I've been looking for some sample images of this lens wide open at the longer focal lengths, for portraits and such. Does any one have any images to show the rendering, and in particular, bokeh etc? I've not found any reviews of this lens and samples are very difficult to find. Would appreciate any picture or insight, thanks.

Hope this unretouched file will work as a sample.

What a truly beautiful and perfect picture. Thank you for sharing it. The rendering is beautiful too.

I just looked at your site, it is wonderful - are all of this Geisha series with this lens?

Thank you for your comment and for visiting my web site.  I am happy that you could find the picture to be useful for your evaluation. The Geisha series is done mostly with the S/S2 but with other lenses as well.  I use the 30-90 a lot but will also carry the 100mm if I specifically want to do portraits.

I do find that the files is less 'responsive' to adjustment for 007 files. Maybe perhaps it does have higher DR that makes the adjustment space in general much wider... hence less responsive....

Been there, done that. I'd keep the 30 and 70 lenses. Better image quality, higher maximum aperture, more effective lens hood. The zoom is good but if you already have the 30 and 70 lenses, I'd suggest not to incur any further costs and just travel and create images with what you already have.

  • 3 weeks later...

I have 9 S-lenses, but the lens that I use most of the time is Vario-Elmar-S 1:3.5-5.6/30-90 ASPH !  Sometimes, complement with the Summicron-S 1:2/100 ASPH for its wide aperture.

I have been using the zoom a bit more this year, I am more impressed with it now that I am in a country where I can still hand hold at f11 ;-) Any reason why you have not got the 120 T/S for a full set.....

john - minus 30mm and 100mm

This is because I bought this Schneider PC-TS Apo-Digitar 5.6/120 HM Aspheric far before Leica introduce the TS-Apo-Elmar-S 1:5.6/120 ASPH, which I believe is an OEM version of my lens.
