Some issues with a 50 Summicron Rigid Type 2

Hello,

I recently acquired this lens and noticed some interesting issues with it. I wanted to check here before proceeding as it may not be worth the time and effort to address it with a repair.

The lens is in pretty amazing condition except for the aperture mark ring is loose. I've included photos of that for reference.

Is this an "easy fix?" I'm planning on bringing this in for a CLA anyways but was curious if a part is missing that makes it loose?

Also, this odd filter ring is on the front. It's Marked "VI LIFA S 39." I can't remove it and even when separating the lens barrel with the focus barrel it won't budge.

Finally, that lens/barrel separation is something I came across on the internet as a sort of feature? Here is the article I found on it.

It appears this lens does not allow the focusing grip to come out as well as that remains attached to the lower portion but in that article it shows that the focus grip should separate with the front element. This means I can't see if the serial numbers match. Any suggestions?

I guess my main question is, is it worth dealing with all of these little issues? I paid about $550 for this which seemed like a reasonable deal. Any guidance would be wonderful. Thanks for your time!

The optical unit didn't unscrew from the focus mount - the rear lens group is still in the focus mount, so the optical unit came apart when you tried to unscrew the whole thing.

This is not uncommon - I have a DR where this also happens, even after a CLA. I don't know how to remove the rear group from the focus mount when the front group comes loose like this.

Often filter rings distort when you squeeze them on two sides, locking them in place. Sometimes gripping the edge of the ring at one point only might allow it to loosen.

Thanks for that info. I figured as much in regards to the optical unit but good to get some confirmation from an experienced user. That isn't so much an issue so I'm not as concerned about that as I don't intend to use it as anything other than what it is. Though it would be nice to know that the optical unit matches the focus unit. The filter thing is funny because the looseness of the front optical piece makes it hard to get a grip on it and try to loosen it. Seems I may have to separate it and then try but that's nerve-wrecking to as handling the interior in a rough manner is a frightening idea. The aperture dot ring is the biggest "issue" as I'd like the marker to stay in place. I guess getting it CLA's but the cost for repairs sort of scares me off. It still works great and pictures seem good with it.

Just go ahead with the CLA...you'll be glad you did. As far as loosening the filter ring, gentle persuasion is your best bet. You might try lightly passing a hair dryer around the edge it is screwed into to see if a little expansion will allow you to remove it, I've often found that stubborn rings usually come off when you invert the lens so the ring faces downward and is placed on a grippable pad on a flat surface (I usually use the perforated rubber pads one gets for use in eating utensil drawers to cushion knives, forks, etc - I get a whole roll for $1 and it is invaluable in my workshop).

What is on the front is a filter adapter ring and probably seized on.  Guess 39mm to series 6.

The old Rigid and DR  Summicrons and 1969 version are made to separate.  However they may seize with time.  My `69 was hard to separate,  but finally came .  Older ones were hard,  but separated more easily.

one trick to remove a stuck filter/hood: get a rubber band that's a little smaller and put it around the filter. Then grip with as many fingers as you can around the edge without squeezing hard- twist-  and often times it comes right off. The rubber band gives a good all around grip without pushing the filter edges in making them lock.
