CiraCrowell Posted June 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted June 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone experienced the following or similar issues: -SL 24-90: Consistent metallic squeaking at the long end when autofocusing (no sound in MF) -SL 90-280: Loose element rattling when the lens is not mounted The 24-90 squeaked out of the box and was (thankfully) exchanged by the dealer. I've had the 90-280 since it's release and it was perfect out of the box but developed the sound of a loose element after fewer than 1000 shots, see attached video. When mounted, the 90-280 does not rattle and performance seems ok. I've used Leica R, M and S lenses over 25 years. Some of my go-to lenses are 40+ years old and going strong so I am mystified by the issues with the new SL lenses. I carry lenses at all times in individual neoprene wraps AND a foam insert within backpack, messenger or roller, so they are as well protected as possible individually and as a whole. After a second sub-standard experience I am beginning to question SL lens reliability and long-term sturdiness. Wondering if anyone else has had issues or if it was just strange luck. TheGodParticle/Hari Posted June 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted June 4, 2016 30-90? You must mean the 24-90? Thankfully no issues that you mention above with both my zooms Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Big John Posted June 4, 2016 Share #4 Posted June 4, 2016 No issue like that on my 28-90 except I can detect a faint rattle like sound if I move it around when mounted on the SL.....and listen v carefully.
ramarren Posted June 4, 2016 Share #5 Posted June 4, 2016 I've experienced no issues whatever using the SL24-90.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 4, 2016 Share #6 Posted June 4, 2016 The rattling is the IS group. Doesn't rattle when it's powered up. Normal behaviour Nothing to worry about. My 90-280 does the same but I do have to shake it deliberately and listen carefully. It's not something you can hear more than a few inches from the lens. If it's more than that take it to your dealer. My 24-90 does not squeak. Gordon
thighslapper Posted June 4, 2016 Share #7 Posted June 4, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) No 24-90 issues. As Gordon says, there is a more noticeable rattle from the 90-280 when power is off from the image stabilisation system .... similar to the Leica Q .... not as easy to spot with the 24-90 though. I use a hand strap and if I carry the 90-280/camera dangling from my hand there is a quite noticeably something moving in the lens when I walk .... and it's just audible as well. It was a bit disconcerting at first until I twigged what it was ...... now I just ignore it. Both lenses have had plenty of use and travel abroad ..... including rattling around on a bicycle for 10 days on rough tracks/roads .... and ... touch wood ... have behaved impeccably to date. More than can be said for my M lenses ...... where about a third have needed remedial attention to get them to work perfectly with an M body .... CiraCrowell Posted June 4, 2016 Author Share #8 Posted June 4, 2016 Fascinating - makes sense the R, M and S lenses would not have IS to rattle, then again, other brand lenses with IS (Sony, Nikon) do not shake unmounted. Wonder why it sounds so loud now though I'm not handling it any differently? Thanks for the explanation and your experience using the 90-280 in rough terrain. Agreed, the rattle IS disconcerting and would be nice for buyers/users to know about.

But they often do, for example.... http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/resources/articles/2014/is_lens_rattling.shtml You'll find similar discussion for other brands. CiraCrowell Posted June 5, 2016 Author Share #10 Posted June 5, 2016 Interesting Jeff, thanks for the link. Never experienced a rattle with Sony or Nikon and these are my first IS stabilized lenses from Leica.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted June 5, 2016 Share #11 Posted June 5, 2016 I had a Canon 70-200 F4LIS that sounded like a ball bearing in a tin can. Never gave me an ounce of trouble though in the 5 years I owned it. Gordon
Joshua Lowe Posted June 5, 2016 Share #12 Posted June 5, 2016 I had a Canon 70-200 2.8 IS II that also had a slight rattle from the IS bits, too. It's normal.
CiraCrowell Posted June 5, 2016 Author Share #13 Posted June 5, 2016 Ok, so some lenses with IS rattle unmounted and others don't. I'm less interested in hearing about other brands and more interested in hearing why there is inconsistency with the SL 90-280. Why do some SLs rattle while other users claim their lenses are silent? And what caused my lens to go from silent to noisy?
LocalHero1953 Posted June 5, 2016 Share #14 Posted June 5, 2016 Mine do not make a rattle noise, but as others have said, I can often feel something moving when carried with power off or asleep - I kept wondering if the mount was loose until I realised what it was. Close to, I can definitely hear IS motor noise when powered up; AF is much quieter.
