There are a number of adapter plates for Arca-Swiss style mounts.  Also a grip like the Photo Equip ML grip provide a central mounting point.  I bought a barely used Really Right Stuff plate from the auction site for not much money and it works great.  Look around there are plenty of options.

Hello CGR,

Welcome to the Forum.

Altho it is customary for many cameras to come with centrally located tripod connections you may well find that the M3's offset location at times is advantageous.

Please note: Certain heavier range/viewfinder lenses such as the 135mm, F2.8, Elmarit & the earlier 90mm, F2, Summicron come with their own centrally located 1/4 & 3/8 combined tripod connections. The connection is on the lens where it should be with a heavier lens.

I have used a 135mm, F4, Tele-Elmar for years in both horizontal & vertical format held in place by a medium sized Leitz Large Ball Head with no problems in terms of camera or lens movement. None. This is combined with easy adjustability on the tripod.

Most  Leitz/Leica range/viewfinder lenses without their own tripod connections are smaller, lighter & more centrally balanced than the above mentioned Tele-Elmar which has most of its weight at the end opposite the camera end because of a reasonably long lens barrel. A longer lens barrel tends to make a lens more unbalanced.

You might try a substantial ball head like a Leitz/Leica Large Ballhead & be pleasantly surprised at the advantages that an offset tripod connection can have when it used with a substantial enough ballhead.

Best Regards,

Michael

I use a Reallyrightstuff MPR 1 3/8 for not only centering the tripod connection but also adding the rapid release.

add your own 1/4 screw.

This allows you to have a base plate with a rapid release thread the full length, so if you want a rapid release system the ability to center is an add on. Yes, RRS makes actual base plate replacement systems for M* and M10, but this is a pretty nice workaround for film cameras. Just about the perfect length.

Otherwise, if you just need to recenter the tripod thread, as Ian said, the handgrip by Leica is an excellent solution.

Simply, I've a few M bodies (sounds torpid/morose, right, but no!)... am using RRS plates to connect to my Acratech ball-head with these plates, with good effect.  On the older Ms, am using the now discontinued (familiar?) RRS B30, & easily accessible to the baseplate release. I've also used the RSS MC-L, again with older Ms, including M8.

Okay, not helpful to you all with the newer M models with tripod mounts _directly_ in the cam body instead of base-plate... may have begun with the M2XX series of cams, dunno.  Sooo, a few observations on tripod mount connection:

--that the tripod mount is _in body_ with newer Ms, a quickly removable tripod plate is key... unless you've a compatible 128GB card... & battery life
--that the RSS plate is ill fitting, whither another means to steady the cam?
--while no spokesperson for, Peak Designs, have a couple plates which may be removed with a smallish coin that I use with my Ries H100-2 & Acratech Ultimate[sic] ball-head (no hex key required, yet stable).
--agreed, the tripod mount with newer Ms is challenging.  Must say I was flummoxed/_bothered_ with this change...

...so, while I keep the RSS plates on my older Ms for additional grip & function, I carry these "coin operated" Peak Designs plates for my M10 when I must affix to a tripod/unipod, as needed.
HTH, in uniton,
Dave
