Behaviour and ecology

Loons are excellent swimmers, using their feet to propel themselves above and under water. However, since their feet are located posteriorly on the body, loons cannot walk. Thus, loons avoid coming to land, except when nesting, mating, or severely injured.

Fantastic birds. Nothing like the call of a loon. I frequently swim in a lake where a pair of loons raise an annual family - and pop up in the water amazingly close. They grace our $1 coin (locally called a "Loonie")
