I hope this is not a silly question.I have just acquired a 90mm Summicron

1960's Canada version.

A very nice Lens. My question is about a threaded boss on the lens.

Is this for tripod mounting or for a monopod or either. I do not think I have ever seen a lens mounted on the tripod, but I have never made a point of looking.

Thanks for any feedback.

Mike.

It is there for a tripod or monopod, or generally and stabilizing assist you wish.

It is on the lens to help balance the combination lens/body, taking strain off the camera.

Hello Mike,

Welcome to the Forum.

Generally this lens came with both a 1/4-20 & a 3/8-16 thread on the bottom.

If you have the opportunity to use it ith a 3/8-16 thread ball head on your tripod, top & bottom, it might be adventageous to do so.

Best Regards,

Michael

I recently picked up a 250 f4 Telyt-R, which also has the round tripod boss, but only 1/4 thread. The large Leitz ball head with Leitz table top tripod makes a pretty functional "chest-pod" to steady the lens.

I use this some on a Sony A7, which does not have a robust mount, so supporting the lens weight on the tripod, with the lens supporting the body works well.
