I don't know how you get the images without a resoonse from the people, especially  being so close at 40cm. Yes, I can imagine their response seconds after when they realise they have been snapped, but I'm referring to the instant before the shutter is released.

 

Are you finalising focus when you raise the camera, or relying on zone focusing and guessing the distance?

People are aware that they have been photographed in many cases are only aware after the shot, sometimes I look for them to look at the camera to see their reactions to having my camera close to their faces.

We can call this divination of the distance, but I'm sure the distance they are my lens because I have done a thousand times and I know not fail, it's just a matter of practice.

The Leica M3 rangefinder only works from one meter, the MP and Monochrom only operate from 0.7 meters, all that does not matter, it only matters that the lens can focus from 0.4 meters and then you should be aware of that and know where that 0.4 meters.

And of course you should be able to see where there is an interesting photograph and you need to be near that place, this is a divination or very lucky.
