lanetomlane Posted May 5, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 5, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) I said I'd never do it but tomorrow I'm going to collect the beast. I hate the lens with regard to size but after reading all the positive comments and seeing the images posted I feel I'm missing out, having the SL body and not the autofocus lens. I'm sure I'll not be disappointed. Cheers, Tom
Advertisement Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Hi lanetomlane, Take a look here 24-90 Lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ramarren Posted May 5, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2016 It's a big thing and a bit off-putting at first heft, but I've gotten more accustomed to it now. It is certainly a very fine performer. It was a chunk o cash to pull out and spend, but I'm happy I did.
steppenw0lf Posted May 5, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 5, 2016 Hi Tom. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Enjoy it. And it is also healthy - just think of the muscle building. But actually the 90-280 will give you even more for your health ... so another option for the future... Stephan
LocalHero1953 Posted May 5, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 5, 2016 So much depends on what you want to use it for. I bought the SL for dedicated photography sessions: portraits, events, occasional still life etc. In those circumstances the size and weight of the SL and the 24-90 don't bother me. I can usually put them down at a convenient moment, and everyone is expecting me to take photos, so the size is not distracting to my subjects either. As of yesterday I have the 90-280 as well and, although it is a step up in size and weight, the same considerations apply. But I took the SL on a break to Bologna recently and found that, although I could carry it around all day with a hand strap, it was definitely not conducive to casual and discreet street photography. In future, for holidays where I'll be mainly on foot my M240 will be my companion. It is still my camera of choice when I am not on a specifically photographic outing. hdrmd Posted May 5, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2016 I agree. It is way too big, but it is very sharp, so I use it anyway. DR

That's pretty much my intension as well Paul. I intend to use it for specific projects, like town & city architecture, landscapes and other applications where size isn't going to be off-putting to anyone. For pure street photography it will be M lenses on the SL or one of the M's. Regards, Tom
Suteetat Posted May 6, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 6, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) It is growing on me. Every time I decided to use it, I was never disappointed. But every time I decided to use it, I feel like I should be doing push up and lots of bicep curls for a few days in advance The last 2 years, I have been strictly a prime kind of person 99% of the time but 24-90 really starts to change that. thighslapper Posted May 6, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 6, 2016 I have given up fiddling with other prime lenses on the SL ...... the 24-90 does everything and with peerless image quality. Once I changed for neck strap to hand-strap I found it much handier and less fatiguing to carry ..... it just dangles fairly effortlessly from the hand and is ready for instant use. (ditto with the 90-280 ... although you may find that hard to believe). 'Heavy and big' is all relative ...... compared to the M and a 40/2 it is monstrous ...... but compared to comparable pro DSLR's it's not .... ramarren Posted May 6, 2016 Share #9 Posted May 6, 2016 A wrist/hand strap definitely works better for me with the SL in general. I like a neckstrap on the M but an SLR format camera tends to hang differently and always seems annoying on a neckstrap.
FlashGordonPhotography Posted May 6, 2016 Share #10 Posted May 6, 2016 I made 6 weeks before I bought mine! I walked from the shop wondering why. Now, I'm very glad I did. Regardless of size it's my favourite standard zoom, ever. Great focal range, optically wonderful and stunningly built. Enjoy your new lens. Gordon p.s. what ever you do don't start thinking how well the longer zoom would match the one you have........
farnz Posted May 7, 2016 Share #11 Posted May 7, 2016 To transport it sounds like a fine reason to buy a new Land Rover, Tom. Looking forward to seeing your 24-90 on the 20th. Pete.

Couldn't afford a new Land Rover Pete with what I paid for the lens. Sorry, but you're going to have to wait until the 21st to see it.
