My experience with the M8 is turning to be a nightmare. (You can track the prologue of the whole story here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/17699-very-interesting-answer-leica-35mm-1-a.html)

It's just returned today from Germany my M8 + 35 Cron combo.

A few shots and voilà.....all as it was before the Leica check.

But it's not enough, no.

Now, after the recalibration of the rangefinder, the two images of a point never coincide (vertical misalignement, when before this was absolutely ok).

They wrote in the papers of some strange electronic modifications to the camera (for what?).

After waiting a month this is what Leica is able to do????

It's simply a shame.

I thought that it was a fault of mines, that it's not possible that the techs at Leica misaligned the rangefinder. I just taked other shots to check, and other ones too.

The reality is that Leica returned to me the camera with a problem NOT solved in any way and without explication, with a rangefined now very misaligned and with some stange electronic modifications for something that I will never know.

What can I do now?

I'm sort of disheartened

Why must you sort these problems yourself? When my first M8 died I simply rang my dealer, they gave me a new one and presumably sent the defective one wherever defective ones go. And then when that second M8 died they did so again. There is no way on earth I would pay that kind of money for something and whilst still within the warranty period accept to wait a protracted length of time to be up and running again. Had the dealer baulked, I would have sought redress from American Express with which credit card I made the initial purpose, received a refund, and repurchased from a different dealer.

Sorry to hear that. Exactly the same thing happened to me, except that mine was already out vertically. I thought of sending it back a second time, but really didn't want to wait, so I just it as best I could for a while, and eventually I decided to tune the focusing myself. I did have success with it, but am reluctant to advise anyone to follow the same route.

Sorry to hear about your trouble. What strange modifications do you mean?

Just call Leica customer service on the telephone. They are very helpful. Whene I had some minor electronic problems they had fedex collect the camera within 24 hours, did a ten-day turnaround and it was perfect. Some time ago, they totally messed up the repair of a Digilux2. One e-mail resulted in a turnaround time of a week, a flawless like new camera, a letter of apology and a free spare battery. Oh yes - and a little box of "Gummibaerchen" (winegums)

I had a rangerfinder misalignment on my M8 and sent my camera to Leica USA. They can repair that problem without going to Germany. My camera was back in a week and works great. No misalignment of the views.

I had similiar problems back in January. I received 2 M8's as a present and after 1 week was playin' the bluez......the 1st after 61 frames...froze....I did everythging that Leica told me to do....battery removal etc.....nothing worked.....the second after 3 days, the RF was out of alignment.....no bumps etc...it just kinda slipped out......they both had that color problem but I do B&W so I overlooked it...I overlooked everything cause I am a Diehard Leica user for well over 40 years....the 1st one my dealer swapped out and then in 2 days....thw same thing happened......froze...solid...

so, after really freakin' out....my med's didn't help......I returned both....purchased an Epson RD-1s...and never looked back...great camera.....

now, on the rangefinder forum, I am getting ready to get another M8.......maybe this time I'll luck out......

the only other alternative for me is to put the Leica Logo on my epson.....shame huh.....

Leica Italy decided to swap my M8 with a new one today.

Happily the new camera has the rangefinder perfectly calibrated BUT...

the backfocus of the 35 cron is a problem of the cron, so still there!

I think that I'll swap it for a 28/2.8 when it will be available. I suspect that Leica created that M8 optimized lens for more than one reason and not all reasons has made public. Maybe they knew that the 35 mm (cron & lux) exhibited subtle to serious focusing problems?

Who knows?

I don't think it's all 35 'crons - I have a new silver one, and it's almost perfect (I don't have any lenses that are completely perfect).

It's definitely not all of them. I have a black one and it is spot on with my M8.

My black 35/2 Asph is also great. The 35/1.4 Asph seems to have more problems, with just a few of the 35/2 Asph having problems. A few 28/2 Asph also have problems, but again, I got lucky with mine.
