Guest NEIL-D-WILLIAMS Posted May 1, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 1, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I got my negatives back from Bang Bang Gang and decided I would try my hand at digitising with my Leica S. The process was okay and needs a wee bitty of fine tuning but the end results was not as good as I was hoping it was going to be. The final file size ended up at ~2100 x 1400 which is okay for FB and the likes but not much use for anything else. I am hoping when I try this with my 6 x 6 I will get better results.............. disappointed Digitized Welcome, dear visitor! gbealnz Posted May 1, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 1, 2016 Not bad for your first attempt Neil, hang in there. Scanning/digitising is not just a matter of snapping a shot, or even simply passing the neg through the scanner. It is a curve that needs to be learnt, and can be steep at first. Which is which in your pics above? Both with your S, or one (which one?), and the other done in store? I'm doing some myself as we speak, liking the Plustek that I found recently.Gary
Doc Henry Posted May 1, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 1, 2016 Neil, the second is a little clogged in the shadows. For me , the main thing is not to reproduce on scan but on paper with a good result. The scan is to post secondary and can be corrected with software The first picture comes from your BBG lab ? Now if you want to print on inkjet (I don't recommend you) , buy an Imacon scan like Chris in "I like film" thread if you look for a great quality Best Henry

david strachan Posted May 1, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 1, 2016 It's always about the journey, mate. You're going well. When you get to the end, you look around and say "well...?"

gbealnz Posted May 2, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 2, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Neil, I was going to write this anyway, and now you've asked, I will. I will stick my neck out a bit, I know you wanted to use the S, and I think it's a great concept, but it really just is "too hard". I should know, I have used the BEOON a bit, and that is more "rigid", in that the camera/lens/slide (or neg) are all at a controlled and fixed (with the ability to adjust, but "fixed") distance. Once it is set up, it's very little to change. Your S, with tripod and light box is a great very casual way, but if the camera is not exactly parallel to the light-box, it all goes out the window. At the expense of sounding silly, I doubt there would be very little on your S that is as cheap as a decent cut-your-teeth scanner. OK, I realise you already have the S, or could use any other DSLR, but you get my drift. Mine? I found a used Plustek 8100 which I am finding absolutely wonderful. It came with SilverFast which many dislike, and I already had purchased Vuescan. I am using it with both software. As a bonus, I'd suggest you could carry-on a scanner like this, when you are n the rig, and scan out there. Regards Gary
250swb Posted May 2, 2016 Share #8 Posted May 2, 2016 Scan once, scan well. All this faffing around trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear is just a waste of time because there will always be the nagging doubt 'could I have done better'. It's why we all buy better cameras isn't it, the 'can we do better' question, so why is copying negatives often answered with 'can't be bothered to do it properly'?
