When we compare things, we're effectively comparing quality traits.

This is expressed as variable data Vs attribute data (many years ago I worked in quality management for the automotive industry)

For example: 

Which car goes faster can be proved beyond reasonable doubt via speed measurement. This is variable data.

Which car is painted the nicest shade of red, this cannot be proved, as taste varies. This is attribute data.

I find that in many cases on the internet (including photography forums) that folks like to debate attribute data whilst pretending it's variable 😅

So below I will present some attribute data between the M9 and 240

This is not scientific.

On the 1st of December I was in a certain place with an M9, a CV35, a 3 stop ND filter and I shot a photo.

Four and a bit weeks later, I was in the same place with an M240, a CV35, a 3 stop ND filter and I shot a photo

 

So this can't be scientific as the conditions weren't matched or controlled.

 

But I find this scenario more true to life, because unless one always plans to carry around camera A and camera B always shooting the same things twice, then IMHO comparing cameras becomes a game of remembering how you think camera A would of looked when you're processing files shot with camera B

 

So I don't present the 2 images below as looking like they were shot with the same camera nor am I claiming that M240 files look like M9 ones.

 

I'm merely presenting the notion that, for me at least, that the 240 can be a pleasing image maker, just like it's predecessor.

Because one small downside of buying an M240 in 2020, is that there ain't half a lot of folks on the internet saying it's a bad camera with poor IQ..

If you're a huge Beatles fan and you're starting a band you gotta decide whether you're going to be a covers band like the bootleg Beatles or a band influenced by the Beatles. With the M240 and my image editing compared to the M9, I try to go for the latter (influence not covers)

Your CV 35 1.7 photos are very nice. I must say I'm really impressed by Voigtlander. The more I dig it, the more I like it. As I said in another thread I foolishly ignored them for few years. 

I also own M9 (actually M-E220) and like its rendering. Was thinking to try M 262 (not 240) but from your comments I'm afraid there will always be some hidden regret/bitterness left. 

Battle of heart vs brain 🙂 M9 is no more servicable so I you know which photo is the last one 🙂 M240 seems to lack in rendering and POP 🙁, M10 is just too expensive in Covid times and also not so reliable (just based on LUF posts, not scientifically proved)🤔

I've only ever played with a 262 in a store. But I've downloaded and played with enough 262 DNGs that make me think it's not a colossal IQ improvement over the 240... Perhaps a little in ISO... but nothing dramatic OMMV

I ended up getting the 240 because it was cheap, I couldn't afford an M10 and I wanted another M to take some of the workload away from my M9p so that hopefully it lasts longer..

I'd like to think that my pictures (that you quoted) show that there's not always a huge gulf in look between the 2 cameras.... 

There are a lot of very clever, very knowledgeable people on here, and I ain't one of them!

However,

The thing I notice about the M9/240 is that when the M9 imports into LR (or whatever) the histogram often has a shape like a mountain. So you spend some moments adding a bit of contrast and the picture looks good.

The 240 picture often arrives with a histogram looking like a ski slope. So you have to raise the shadows, then it looks kinda flat and digital so you work to add contrast to the midtones. 

So IMHO the biggest difference between them is the amount of effort the 240 requires in post, but again OMMV

I would say that skin and lip tones are a lottery on the 240, but I think also this is true on the M9 too! (especially inside)

Adam, have you produced your own preset for your M240 which, hopefully, incorporates your own ColorChecker profile? If not, that would remove the need for repetitive corrective post-processing and give you an instant better baseline for tweaking your results.

Yes I have several homegrown presets including custom .dcp files

To be honest, IMO the M9/240 differences have a lot to do with native tonality (which of course affects colours) rather than a specific colour deficit on the part of the 240

I like the 240. Do I like the M9 files more? Well that depends... on ISO, on the quality of the light... at base ISO with a well exposed dng I think the M9 is nicer, but change any of those parameters and there’s no clear cut winner

Obviously you can change the default tonality and set a custom tone curve when you create a custom dcp profile, but personally I find that this can be one of those things that sometimes fixes problems and sometimes makes them

In summary

I find it’s the tonality of the M9 which requires some work to approximate on the 240.
