SL with M-lenses

Hi, I have just received my SL(FW 1.2) and tested on my 50mm Lux ASPH 6Bit lens.

I did some readings regarding the Aperture value issues so would like to start this thread to ask for help between SL and M Lenses.

1). When I was shooting at F1.4, the scene could not provide me with any Aperture Value but it shows "--" is it normal?

2). As above when I was shooting at F1.4, I can only see the F stop when I review my photos and most of the time it shows higher F stops i.e.:1.7,2,2.4...etc is there anything worrying?

3). When I was shooting at F1.4 but photo shows Aperture Value as F2.4, which is the correct F stop that my photos are actually shot at?

4). There is a menu that shows M-lenses profile but I can't access the menu, how can I do so?

Thank you in advance.

On M lenses, the aperture is a purely mechanical setting, and there is no means of communicating it to the body. As with the M body, the SL makes a guess at your aperture setting by comparing the TTL brightness with the brightness measured on an external (non-TTL sensor). The guess is usually wrong by a stop or so.

For R and M lenses the camera has to guess the aperture value as there are no electric contacts to the lens (combination of main sensor and small sensor at front). If you hold your hand in front of the small sensor, this influences the "aperture" written into EXIF.

No reason to worry, unless you are a bookkeeper and need highly precise numbers.    B)

P.S. : You like the bokeh of this lens ?   I guess so.

P.S. 2: Upgrading will not change this behaviour, so upgrade only when you are ready for it - no hurry.

I think you have the 6-bit coding, so the camera has what it needs. If you use a lens without coding then you can access the menu. Then the camera needs this informaition from you.

Which adapter do you use - the expensive original Leica adapter ?

If no, you have no access to the menu. (Go to your dealer and insist on the original adapter).

It is ASPH 11892, is it 6 Bit Coding?

Thanks.

Thanks...How does FW 2.0 helps in this aspect or none?

With firmware V2, you will see the estimate aperture for the R and M lenses all the time in the EVF, on the back screen and on the top screen.

The only problem with that is that the estimate aperture is not as stable as it should be, it tends to change quickly when you move the camera and can be a bit disturbing.

Using the 50 APO wide open, I am regularly told I have shot at f/2.4, not 2.0. So not wildly wrong but wrong, and yes, guessing that's based on an approximation.

Probably the photometric aperture or T number.

f/2 is the geometrical aperture

I'm using the current Leica adapter and a new 50mm lux. The lens name for the 50mm lux does show up in Lightroom. But, when you use the new Leica Macro Adapter M and the 50mm lux, the lens name in Lightroom is always the 90mm with the Marco Adapter M. I have mentioned this error to Leica and hopefully this will be addressed in a future firmware.

The macro adapter expects it to be used with the 90mm f4.

They can only code it as this ....... or just 'Macro-Adapter' and nothing else. The camera coding sensor cannot see through a centimetre of metal to the coding pits on the lens attached to it.

Take your pick which is more useful as Leica have only these 2 choices ........ I cannot see them changing the current registration of the coding in their listings.....

In a future upgrade it would be useful that when the macro adapter were attached the camera would have a full list of M lenses come up that you could edit to only include those you would use with the macro adapter. I suppose they could leave anything wider than 28mm off the list. Then in the EXIF it could read macro adapter + (lens selected from the list). I think they could do this in a firmware upgrade but I can see why it isn't a priority.

I figured out why the 50 APO wide open shows up as f/2.4 -- because the camera thinks it is is 50 Summarit.

I can't seem to figure out how, in the menu system, I can override what lens it thinks it is and make sure the camera knows it's the APO. If anyone has an idea of how to do that, I'd appreciate it.  At least for me, the mystery is solved, on why the camera insists on a different aperture in the metadata: it misunderstands what lens is attached.

As long as the lens has the right 6-bit code, it should recognize the lens. You might check to see that your coding hasn't rubbed off.
