luigi bertolotti Posted April 13, 2016 Share #21 Posted April 13, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Renting at a DECENT rate could be a nice option but, Jaap, honestly speaking.... would it be worth to spend, say, X for (example) two rentals of 1 month each of SL + 90/280... when with X+d (with "d" rather LITTLE or even NEGATIVE) you could buy another unLeica body and use some superb glass you already have, like the 105-280 or the APO 400 ? Ok... no AF... this is probably the only minus ...
Advertisement Posted April 13, 2016 Posted April 13, 2016 Hi luigi bertolotti, Take a look here Wondering. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jmahto Posted April 13, 2016 Share #22 Posted April 13, 2016 I will happily use R lenses, even the heaviest ones, on an NEX7 for instance. But that is not the point. I don't like shelling out in excess of 10.000 Euro for a tool that I will only use occasionally, with luck three or four weeks a year... highlight mine... Then where is dilemma!... Or is it that being "happy" is not enough for you. You want to be "happiest"?
luigi bertolotti Posted April 13, 2016 Share #23 Posted April 13, 2016 And, Jaap, another friendly note from one who likes your pictures and your approach to photography as emerges from your site... you are a Leiciste, undoubtly, and, so as me, do trust that SL is a serious camera... so a camera that one has to master in its many subtle possibilities... there is a learning curve, stepped initially, then going on with incremental refineries (I'm still here with M240) : is this compatible with a rental approach, 3 max 4 weeks a year ? This isn't the way, imho... personally ,as an amateur, it's suffcient for me to try to master ONE system,,,, and periodic GAS Attacks can be revolved in other ways... jonoslack Posted April 13, 2016 Share #24 Posted April 13, 2016 Now that Leica has brought out an amazing Telezoom, the SL has gained a lot of interest for me as a safari camera, especially if a 1.4x extender were to appear, but at the same time it would be limited to be an "one-month-a-year" camera, as I prefer using my M system for anything else. Maybe it would be a good idea for Leica to introduce a rental service? You wouldn't limit it to a 'one month a year' camera. Resistance is useless . . and the 24-90 is such a fine lens for those small excursions
jonoslack Posted April 13, 2016 Share #25 Posted April 13, 2016 I even was told about a used one - no go.Not for me I've spoken to the used person, and he says he was having a brian haemorrhage and has changed his mind
Jeff S Posted April 13, 2016 Share #26 Posted April 13, 2016 I imagine LensRentals in the USA will rent the 90-280mm and the SL. Unfortunately they do not rent outside US....due to shipping charges. We're fortunate in the US, as they carry Leica gear along with others, and they're a great company to deal with. If Jaap were here, it would be a no-brainer. thighslapper Posted April 13, 2016 Share #27 Posted April 13, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) That is close to my dilemma, which I think I have resolved. I can see some few occasions when the AF would be attractive, (still the only thing that materially differentiates it from the M in my usage: the EVF is less straightforward) but for at least half of those occasions something like a Fuji XT1 is more than adequate. So the SL, which has a certain appeal, would realistically see so little use that I'm resisting any temptation to buy it. Assisted in no small measure by its handsome price. Would I rent one? Probably not, because I like to bond with a camera, if that makes sense, and find the best way to match my limitations to the camera's strengths, and a short burst of usage wouldn't work unless it was a very specific task that couldn't be accomplished any other way, which again trying to be realistic is hardly ever the case. So my answer is, be realistic! mmmm.... having most of the digital cameras that Leica has produced over the last 6 years I have to say that my M's haven't been used (with the exception of the M246 for B&W) since I got the SL and unless you tote the M with a single or couple of lenses the weight and size issue (which is the only significant one) disappears..... and you have a lot of advantages ..... and few negatives. the only real issue is justifying an SL and an M ...... or dumping one for the other...... and the nagging worry about what Leica are up to with the M's successor..... will it be a quantum leap forward or will Leica keep it a basic RF and actually reduce the digital bells and whistles to keep it unique ..... now I'm an impoverished pensioner I suppose I will have to be sensible like everyone else ....... Yes, I have diverted my GAS to Peterson pipes . I have been there, done that albeit with (D)SLR instead of mirrorless. I'm sticking to one main system as best I can. I never doubt the qualities of the SL, but cannot shake off 40 years of M Maybe I've reached a point in time to let the future overtake me.
